Ronald Delancy commit: What does it mean for Nebraska?

Nebraska bolstered its secondary with the addition of Ronald Delancy Tuesday afternoon.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound cornerback out of Miami (Fla.) Northwestern announced his commitment to the Big Red via social media. Delancy picked NU over offers such as Louisville, Pitt, Missouri, Washington State, UCF, Wake Forest and had close to 20 total offers to his name. Delancy becomes the 13th known verbal commit for Nebraska's 2020 recruiting class.

Here are some quick takes on what the commitment of Delancy means for the Huskers.

1. Credit Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher landing Delancy. Fisher has a good relationship with the coaching staff at Miami Northwestern and had been able to see plenty of Delancy to know that he had the tools he likes in cornerbacks. NU offered last spring on April 19 and again sent the written offer as soon as they could on August 1. So Delancy has been a guy that Fisher has wanted from the start.

2. Even though Delancy was a priority target for Coach Fisher, the Miami native had been a longtime commit to Louisville dating back to February 15 of 2019. However, Fisher and the NU staff got him on campus for the Ohio State game weekend and Delancy decommitted shortly after his official visit to Lincoln concluded. Looking back, the Ohio State weekend has already netted the Huskers commitments from 2021 Rivals100 offensive tackle Teddy Prochazka, 2020 Alabama linebacker Rodney Groce and now Delancy.

3. I see Delancy as more of a pure cornerback, but the nice thing is that he has played safety in the past as well. So, as we've seen with virtually all of the defensive backs the Huskers have taken lately, the the possibility exists that Delancy could play corner, nickle or safety once he arrives in Lincoln which obviously gives Fisher a lot of flexibility with his secondary. The Huskers now have three defensive backs committed with room to take one or two more for 2020.

4. Delancy has the speed to run with fast wide receivers and fluid hips to maintain tight coverage. I really like that you can see him playing off the ball and in press coverage in his film. He's not afraid to get physical at the line of scrimmage with wideouts that are bigger than he is. He also shows the ability to get off blocks when in press coverage too.

5. Delancy might break the mold a little bit in terms of the overall size of defensive back that Travis Fisher has been targeting lately, but he has said in the past that he has no problem sacrificing some size for speed and someone that is a "dog" on the field. Delancy has plenty of "dog" in him. He appears to be a sure tackler and he actually likes to lay the big hit if he can. Some corners are not willing to get dirty and make big hits, but Delancy shows that he has skill and physicality.

6. I love how well Delancy breaks on the football. He is gets to the ball fast and is very good at making plays on it once he gets there. Nebraska's defense is about being aggressive, making plays on the football and creating turnovers. That's what Delancy does very well in high school.

7. Speaking of high school, Delancy comes from one of the most talented and best programs not just in Florida, but in the nation in Miami Northwestern. The Bulls produce double-digit DI guys on a yearly basis. Getting your foot in the door there is a big deal. Also, the addition of Delancy now gives the Huskers four commits from the state of Florida in this class which is very nice to see after they had a down year recruiting the state last year.
