July is widely considered the most important month on the college basketball recruiting calendar, and Nebraska made it clear that Eric Hunter was it’s No. 1 target was for the 2018 class.
During the three live evaluation periods last month, NU head coach Tim Miles and/or assistant coach Michael Lewis were court side for every one of Hunter's games with the Team Harris AAU program.
The effort and interest the Huskers showed certainly didn’t go unnoticed by the four-star Indianapolis (Ind.) Tindley shooting guard.
“It was one or the other or both of them at each game,” Hunter told HuskerOnline.com. “Nebraska did not miss a game in the month of July.
“It definitely means a lot. It shows that I’m very important to them, and they just want me to know that they’re there. Obviously the evaluation part, I’m not necessarily being evaluated anymore. So I definitely look at that.”
Not that Miles and Lewis needed much more convincing that Hunter, who's ranked the No. 98 overall player in 2018, was the top player on their recruiting board. But the 6-foot-3 prospect made sure to cement that status with his July performances.
In four games at the Adidas Summer Championships, for example, Hunter averaged 20 points while shooting 58 percent from the field, including hitting 13-of-21 3-pointer (61.9 percent).
“I definitely exceeded my goal (for July),” Hunter said. “I just wanted to be able to compete, and to come out with that mindset came a lot more recognition and accolades and all that stuff. So I definitely exceeded what I wanted to do.”
With his AAU career now in the books, Hunter is now turning his attention towards the final steps of the recruiting process leading into his senior year.
Back in June, Hunter announced that his top six schools were Nebraska, Ohio State, Purdue, Minnesota, Butler, and Xavier.
He said those six remained his top options coming out of the AAU season, and now the issue was deciding which schools he wanted to officially visit.
Hunter said he and his family planned to sit down and organize a visit schedule in the next couple of weeks, but as of now no officials or dates have been set.
He added that he’s not even sure he will take all five of his allotted official visits before making a decision, mainly because he’s already unofficially visited all six schools on his list.
The one thing Hunter does know is that he ideally wants to make a commitment before the start of his senior season.
Though he already saw Lincoln on an unofficial last fall, do the Huskers have a chance at a return trip for an official visit?
“Yeah,” Hunter said. “that would be ideal to get back out there to Lincoln.”
