Scott Frost appearance on Golic & Wingo

Related: Frost Q&A with Jim Rome

In an appearance on ESPN's "Golic and Wingo" radio show Friday morning, new Nebraska coach Scott Frost said he felt that UCF had reached a “glass ceiling” when it came to the college football playoff rankings.

"I think, to be honest with you, I think the glass ceiling was put there intentionally," Frost said. "It was apparent to me that every single week the committee made a decision, 'We have to keep them at a certain place in the rankings so that we don't run into the trouble of having to move them up if people ahead of them lose.' And every week, a new two-loss team or a new three-loss team was moved ahead of us. Finally, they moved Stanford ahead of us, so they must be better than UCF because they are a Power Five team. Well, they lost to a Group of Five team.”

Frost also added on by saying that he thinks a lot of assumptions were made. He also said that “if it was an eight-team playoff, we might be No. 6 or 7, UCF might be No. 6 or 7. Because at that point, the committee might say, ‘OK, now that there’s eight teams, it’s OK to have a Group of Five team in.”

UCF finished 12th in the final CFP rankings and is the only unbeaten FBS school remaining this season. There were six teams that had multiple losses that were ahead of UCF in the final polls, including 10-3 Auburn.

Here are some highlights from the interview this morning:

***Frost reiterated that the UCF players were his top priority over the last month and his coaching staff was second. Frost said that he wanted to give each of his coaches the opportunity to follow him.

"I watch a lot of other coaches take the next step and get jobs and they leave people behind," Frost said. "And they say, 'You were good enough to help me win there but you're not good enough help me win at my next one.' Like I said, my priority was the (UCF) players first and then making sure that my staff that helped us be 12-0 was taken care of."

***Golic asked if getting snubbed out of the playoffs does more to his “final talk” to the team that’s playing against one of the best teams in the country (Auburn). Frost said

“We hadn’t talked about it all year," Frost said. "I didn’t want to be one of those coaches who talks about it and then loses the next game and look like a fool. We are there now.”

***Frost continues to be the guy to deflect the attention off of him to focus on the players. While he said there are “a lot of messages” he wants to send to Husker players, he wants them to have fun, but they will be the hardest working people on the field and in the weight room.

"I don't want to make it about me, I don't want to make it about the past," Frost said. "It's about these kids, it's about the here and now. But I want our players to know there are standards at Nebraska that we're going to expect and the people here expect. And we're going to have a tough team, we're going to have a physical team.

***Frost said that coaches will travel back to Orlando next week for three practices. That would have been their original plan had they remained at UCF. The status of Frost coaching the Peach Bowl is still up in the air, but expects details to be sorted out “today, tomorrow, this weekend.” He also reiterated the fact that he and his staff want to coach UCF for their bowl game.

***Frost was asked to choose what the most exciting thing that has happened between winning a national title at Nebraska in 1997, going 12-0 this season with UCF, or the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series. Frost was quick to bring up the fact of his first son was born a little over a month ago. He called it “the most special thing that could ever happen to a guy. As good of a year as it’s been, that has to be the highlight.”
