Recap of Bill Moos Sports Nightly appearance

Here is a recap of what Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos had to say during his appearance on Sports Nightly on the Huskers IMG Sports Network.

***Moos made four stops throughout central Nebraska this weekend in: Columbus, Hastings, Grand Island and Kearney. Moos said he was “very appreciative” of all the fans that came out. He said while his schedule has been packed, everything has been positive in his transition.

***Moos was “blown away” when he saw the support and the knowledge of the fans when he attended Nebraska volleyball’s home matchup against Purdue, “Until you see it, you can’t really appreciate it,” Moos said.

***Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook asked Moos to address the volleyball team during his first week on the job and Moos said they were the model to follow. Moos said they were “the posterchild for what I want Husker athletics to be across the board.”

***Moos expressed disappointment when talking about the Husker football record this season, but said it’s good to finish on a high note. He said that he has had the chance to talk with Riley, members of the support staff and the fans about Riley. He emphasized that he really wants to listen to the fans.

***Moos said he’s “going to push” the Big Ten into making Iowa into Nebraska’s rival. He said that Nebraska needs a rivalry game and that he’s already been in talks with the Big Ten about keeping NU-Iowa as the annual Black Friday game. The Heroes Trophy is currently tied 3-3 since Nebraska has joined the Big Ten.

***Sports Nightly host Greg Sharpe asked Moos about Iowa coming out with more intensity lately in the Black Friday game, and Moos emphasized that the Huskers needed to come out intense for every game, regardless of the opponent. “That’s how the game should be played. We’ve got to get back to that being the case.” He also thanked Nebraska fans for being so loyal and so patient.

***One of the biggest things for Moos is for the “fans to see good football” and that “whoever coaches the team should appreciate that.” Moos also explained that his peers are “envious” of all of Nebraska’s facilities, the loyal fan base and everything NU has to offer.

***The first week that Moos was here, he was taken on a facility tour and they went five and a half hours, and they were still only half done. He said while certain sports could get a little bit better, “the table is set here”.

***Moos hired 11 coaches during his tenure with Washington State. In his three previous stops, he’s had to build facilities, change the culture, and change nutrition programs, but so much of that is already in place at Nebraska. He thinks that NU across the board is “a little better” than the rest of the Big Ten.

***Moos thinks that everything that is in place will pays dividends in recruiting, “especially now.” He emphasized that Nebraska pays for the parents to come along on visits and that he’d want his son or daughter to give a good look at Nebraska. He also said he would make himself available to the coaches and wants to share his vision with recruit’s parents.

***Moos said that if he wasn’t impressed with Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green and University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, he wouldn’t have taken the job. “They got up and came over and said, ‘Hi, I’m Ronnie.’ And I thought, ‘these are my kind of guys.’ It sounds like where I grew up.” The fact that they are so new on the job encourages him.

***Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany is someone that Moos has admired for a long time. Moos got to spend a day with him and learned the practices of the Big Ten and more. He expressed that he’s really looking forward to being a part of a conference that is so respected.
