Porcher finds what he was looking for in Nebraska

When we spoke with Robert Porcher IV after his stay in Lincoln for the Big Red Weekend, he told us that he nearly pulled the trigger while on campus. He held off on making an immediate pledge, but it only took one more day of deliberation to come to the conclusion that Nebraska was the right fit.

"I knew on Monday that I was going to commit, but I took a couple more days to think it over and make sure," Porcher told HuskerOnline.com.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder considered taking unofficial visits to Michigan and Arizona, but he decided he had found his collegiate home and did not need to see any other options.

"We just felt like Nebraska was the right place to be and it felt like home," Porcher explained. "We felt that we've known the coaches there for a long time and it felt comfortable.

"They have good academics, and we felt they would help me strive to be a be better person, football player, student, and they would be able to get me to the next level after college."

By "we" Porcher meant himself and his father, Robert Porcher III, who attended college at South Carolina State University and played for the Detroit Lions his entire professional career where he was a three time Pro Bowl selection.

His dad is fully on board with his decision, especially since he was already acquainted or familiar with several Husker staff members from his NFL days.

As a junior at Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips High, Porcher had 92 tackles, 32 tackles-for-loss and 11 sacks. Nebraska told Porcher that he will play of the edge of their Blackshirt defense once he gets to college.

"They already placed me at the defensive end position, and they run what we do here in our defense, so I felt comfortable with that.

"I will play base defensive end and maybe some three-technique when they go to their nickel defense. I do that at my high school, so I don't have any problem with that. I just don't want to play the three-technique on every down."

Porcher is only rated a two-star on Rivals.com, but he turned down offers from likes of Michigan, USC, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Mississippi State, Arizona, Arizona State, Cal and Missouri to play for the Cornhuskers.

And judging from their reaction, the Nebraska coaches could not be more thrilled to have him on board as the 11th commitment to their Class of 2017.

"Coach (John) Parrella was excited and screaming on the phone," Porcher shared about his commit phone conversation. "Coach (Mike) Riley was excited too, and he said that he can't wait to get me up there again so he can spend more time with me."
