Omar Manning commitment: What does it mean for Nebraska?

Nebraska added a huge piece to its recruiting class on Friday evening with the new commitment of Omar Manning.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound receiver out of Kilgore (Texas) junior college committed to NU over offers from Texas A&M, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina and too many others to mention who were pursuing him. Manning becomes the 16th known verbal commit for Nebraska's 2020 recruiting class.

Here are some quick takes on what the commitment of Manning means for the Huskers.

1. Scott Frost can close. Nebraska's head coach showed that he can be a strong finisher with recruits right from the start with his transition class as he garnered 10 commitments in the last two weeks leading up to the February signing date. He also proved it again in the 2019 class by securing commitments from Ty Robinson and Noa Pola-Gates down the stretch leading into the early signing date.

2. This is a big-time get as Nebraska made Manning a top priority from the start and put a lot of time, effort and energy into recruiting him. Landing a big, instant impact type of WR in this class was a must and they were able to get it done.

3. Ryan Held does it again and Junior college recruiting is back in a big way for Nebraska. Held has been the lead recruiter on Manning and, while this was an entire staff effort, Held deserves most of the credit. Held has done an amazing job at landing potential big-time recruits in this class.

4. Maybe the biggest glaring need, in addition to edge rushers, the Huskers absolutely had to address in this 2020 class was big-bodied receivers. Adding Manning to go along with Zavier Betts, will give Nebraska's offense some added punch heading into next season. Manning and Betts were likely Nos. 1 & 2 on the Huskers' Board for this cycle at wideout. Their presence will only make Wan'Dale Robinson even more effective as a deadly threat in next season's offensive attack.

5. Manning's pledge gives Nebraska 7 four-star commitments this cycle, which only puts them behind Ohio State [13], Penn State [13] and Michigan [12] in the B1G conference. And they're not done yet. They still have the potential to land a few more, when all is said and done, and they still have the possibility of matching last year's haul of 11 four-star commitments.

6. More versatile receiver weapons for the Husker quarterbacks. Manning is the big-bodied wideout they needed to add in this class, but that doesn’t mean he’s a possession guy. He runs very well after the catch and has terrific hands. His presence on the field should change so much for Nebraska’s offense, and make NU's starting quarterback next season that much better.

7. Landing Manning on Friday, and heading into the final days before the dead period, really gives this coaching staff a lot of momentum on the recruiting front. The Huskers likely have one, and possibly even two, spots left at the WR position now that Manning has committed. They are also pursuing targets at several other positions in the hope of closing out this Class of 2020 in a very strong way.
