***Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf echoed Mike Riley's comments from Saturday that this week was going to be very important in terms of perfecting the details in the game plans on both sides of the ball. Langsdorf said the offense has been a bit sloppy with procedural things like lining up properly and getting the plays in quickly enough.
[rl]***Langsdorf said all of the offensive installation is in, and now it's a matter of cleaning up the execution of plays and trimming the fat off the playbook by figuring out what the team does best.
***Offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh said tackle Zach Sterup had a couple bad days of practice last week, but has rebounded well and had a couple good days in a row on Saturday and Monday.
***Langsdorf said Ryker Fyfe has stood out lately with his ability to make plays, and that the junior is making a strong push to win the No. 2 quarterback job. Langsdorf added that AJ Bush has also been playing well and is competing for the backup spot as well.
***Langsdorf said they're "still getting there" in establishing a starting five on the offensive line, but knows they need to do so fairly soon in order to start building chemistry up front with the top unit. Cavanaugh said the staff might have the starting group established by the end of the week.
***Cavanaugh said Nick Gates was probably the only lineman who could be a swing guy and play either side of the line right now.
***Langsdorf praised the play of Stanley Morgan Jr., saying he's a freshman "who hardly knows what he's doing" but still manages to make plays every single day. Langsdorf said it was too soon to say for sure that Morgan would be in line for immediate playing time this season, "but he's for sure in that conversation."
***Asked to evaluate the passing game thus far, Langsdorf said they are "in the ballpark" of where they want to be, but still have a long way to go. He said the struggles we've seen during fall camp haven't just been on the quarterbacks, as the mistakes have come from the offensive line and the receivers as well.
***Langsdorf said the offense worked a lot on red zone passing on Monday, and that the passing game looked pretty good.
***Fyfe said he lost nearly 25 pounds over the summer and dropped to about 190 while dealing with a personal medical issue. He said he was cleared to return to action back in July and has been good to go ever since. He said he was grateful to the staff for sticking with him during the ordeal, which he said kept him out from May to July
***Here are the players that sat out of Monday's practice with various injuries: Chris Jones, Antonio Reed, Brandon Reilly, Lane Hovey, Jordan Stevenson, Alonzo Moore, Sam Burtch and Taariq Allen.
