HuskerOnline.com has confirmed with multiple sources close to Keyshawn Johnson Jr. that the true freshman wide receiver is no longer part of the Nebraska football program.

Sources say Johnson Jr. will be taking somewhat of a leave of absence from the team right now, but the door is open for his return next January assuming he has taken care of a few requirements prior to that time. The exact conditions for his return are unknown right now, but the door is open for it to happen assuming they are met.

When reached, Keyshawn Johnson Sr. said he was involved with the decision along with head coach Mike Riley and fully supportive of both his son, Riley and the Nebraska football program.

Johnson Jr., a four-star prospect out of Calabasas, Calif., was a huge part of NU's 2017 recruiting class. He arrived as an early enrollee last January, but was late getting on campus due to complications from appendicitis. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound wideout missed all but a handful of spring practices, but was still able to make it back in time to play in the Red-White game in April.

The true freshman was cited for possession of marijuana less than one ounce and drug paraphernalia earlier this month.

Johnson Sr. confirmed that his son is already back in Los Angeles and will be working out and most likely taking classes online or at a Junior College this fall.
