Ishie Oduegwu now totals seven offers

Denton, Texas defensive back Ishie Oduegwu has been seeing his list of offers steadily climb. He now has them from LSU, Nebraska, UCLA, Missouri, Texas Tech, Tulsa and BYU.
"I'm supposed to go down to Oklahoma State by the end of July and they said they're also going to offer me when I get there. Kansas State is recruiting me pretty hard, but they haven't offered me yet. I went to camp there this summer. I don't think they or Texas have offered any defensive backs yet. My mom has talked with Coach Elliott from Kansas State and she was pretty impressed with him."

As a junior, the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder had 152 tackles, 30 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions and 15 passes broken-up.
"My strength is being a run-stopper. I love run-support and being able to stop the run. LSU did talk to me about playing some receiver, but mostly everybody else is recruiting me for defensive back. To me, it doesn't matter which position I play. The way coaches see it is I'm a safety in a corner's body."
A couple of his offers fall into the "special" category for him.
"Yeah probably Nebraska and LSU. I just like their defenses and I like the way their coaching staffs are. I just like them both a lot."
The Bayou Bengals do hold the overall edge over the Cornhuskers at this time, though.
"LSU is my leader and probably Nebraska is after them. If I had to commit today it would be to LSU. I really liked talking to Coach Williams from LSU. I like the way Coach Saban gets fired up and from what I've seen from all the letters they've sent me I like their facilities. My mom has talked to them also and she is impressed with the good academic program they have. She's all into that."
What is it he likes about Nebraska to make them second on his list?
"Nebraska? The reason they caught me is because of Coach Gill. Do you know who Turner Gill is? He's one of the best option quarterbacks ever to the play game. They got Coach Callahan now too and with his NFL experience, that helps them a lot. I want to play in the League, and that's one of the things I'm looking at."
Surprisingly, Oduegwu hasn't heard much from the in-state Longhorns.
"To tell you the truth, I haven't really talked to Texas that much. I didn't make it to their camp and I haven't talked to them in a while. Texas Tech is recruiting me very hard, though. For my official visits I know I'm going to go to Florida, UCLA and Nebraska for sure. Just them three right there because I want to get away from home. I want to leave the state for college."
He was asked what his priorities for his college choice are.
"A good football team with a good family environment. A team that bonds really well and coaches that care about their players. There's a chance I could commit early, but what I really want to do is wait until December when coaches can call me more. Something might come up before that, you never know, but for now I plan to wait."
His main focus now is turning to his senior season.
"I'm working out and trying to get stronger and faster. This week is the last week for team workouts and then I'll start working out on my own. We start two-a-days on August 5th and I'm ready for it. I think we're going to have a pretty good team. We want to get back to the state championship game. We finished 14-2 last year and La Marque beat us in triple over time in the state championship game. We want to win it this year."
