Huskers pick-up commitment No. 8 on Wednesday

As Nebraska gets ready to host a bevy of recruits for their spring game weekend, the Cornhusker coaches continue to build momentum on the recruiting trail.

Omaha (Neb.) North offensive guard Michael Decker is the No. 1 in-state recruit for this cycle and he became the eighth member of NU's class of 2015 on Thursday.

"I was just at home thinking things over, and I had a long talk with my dad, and I finally just thought, you know what, Nebraska is just the best place for me," Decker told HuskerOnline.com.

"It just felt like home and Nebraska was the first school to offer me, so I always just thought that they showed the most interest in me. I really felt that it was like home to me because it's only an hour away."

Decker said the first persons he broke the news to were his mom and brother, and that he told Omaha North head coach Larry Martin right after them.

"I then messaged one of the Nebraska coaches to see if it was all right if I called them," Decker recounted. "Finally, I called Coach (Barney) Cotton and it was the perfect timing because he was in the same room as Coach Bo (Pelini) and Coach (John) Garrison, so it was really fun to listen to them get really excited."

In the end, it all boiled down to the fact that the North Viking believed Nebraska was the perfect fit for him.

"Well, I mean the one thing that stands out, and it sounds cliché, was the family type of atmosphere I felt there and just the comfort ability," Decker shared. "And the academic support I didn't know about because I wasn't able to see that the first time I went down there as a sophomore. I felt like my parents were really high on the academic support.

"And you know, playing in Memorial Stadium for two state championships, and being able to attend a spring practice and talk with Coach Garrison and Coach Cotton, I just felt that they were the coaches I wanted to play for. I finally got the chance to talk to them one-on-one and it was great."

Omaha North head coach Larry Martin knew that Decker was close to pulling the trigger for NU and the timing was just right to do it now.

"He really wanted to do it before the spring game," Martin said. "His big thing was he wanted to go down there Saturday as a Husker so he could really meet the players and the other recruits. He also has a great relationship with Barney Cotton and a lot of great things to say about him."

Decker stated that he is overwhelmed and relieved to have his college decision out of the way.

"I am super excited to finally have it over," Decker said. "I feel pretty relaxed and pretty content with where I am right now. It was fun while it lasted, I'm not going to lie, but I felt that I'd better do it now or else I would end up regretting it."

Decker said that he has not gotten the chance to get to know any of the other early commitments to Nebraska's Class of 2015 yet, but he plans to do just that during this weekend's spring game festivities.

He also said that he plans to attend the Under Armour Rivals Camp Series event in Chicago on May 4.
