The Nebraska baseball (9-4) team rallied together five late runs to come back and beat Minnesota (3-10) in game one of the seven-inning Saturday doubleheader. The Golden Gophers walked in three runs in the bottom of the sixth and had two errors that allowed the Huskers to regain the lead.

Chance Hroch got the start for the Big Red and started off hot, getting through the first three innings allowing zero hits and walking just one batter. In the fourth inning, two base hits scored a run for the Gophers, and in the next inning a double and a bunt gave Minnesota their first lead. Hroch's day was done after 4.2 innings and he gave way to Tyler Martin.

The NU offense started fast again and in the first inning they led off with a walk to Joe Acker. Following this, Acker was advanced by a sacrifice bunt, and then a base hit put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly then got Acker home and gave Nebraska an early 1-0 lead.

After the first inning the Husker bats cooled down and in the fifth inning they had to go to the bullpen on defense. Tyler Martin was sent to the mound in the top of the fifth with two outs and he retired the side quickly. In the seventh, when the Big Red were down 2-1, Martin walked a batter and hit one, and that ended his day. Cam Wynne was next to the mound, and he allowed the two runners to score, but then was able to retire the side, now down 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, NU got two runners aboard with one out, and then a strikeout made it a dire situation. A dropped ball foul that could have ended the inning was ruled as an error, and following that was a walk that loaded the bases. A new pitcher for Minnesota walked two more batters and scored Nebraska two runs. Jaxon Hallmark then hit a ground ball to third and a fielding error scored one more to tie the game. One more walk and a hit-by-pitch put the score at 6-4 in favor of the Huskers.

Spencer Schwellenbach came in to close the game in the seventh inning and gave up a hit, but retired the side with no further damage.

Minnesota meltdown

In the bottom of the sixth inning, NU was able to stay alive with two runners on base and two outs. The Big Red worked a walk and loaded the bases, and another two walks cut Minnesota's lead to just one run. Following this, the Golden Gophers had a fielding error that tied the game. Another walk and a hit-by-pitch gave Nebraska the lead they needed to win this game. Minnesota's rough pitching helped the Huskers take the lead in this game.

Offensive lull

The NU offense struggled to put together hits for a majority of this game. If it wasn't for the poor pitching from the Golden Gophers, the Big Red may not have been able to string together enough to win this game. With six hits, three coming in the first and last innings, the offense had a tough time in this game. Max Anderson was the only Husker to have more than one hit.

What's next

Nebraska will play game two of the doubleheader following game one and will close the series out tomorrow at noon.

Both games can be streamed on BTN+ or heard on Husker Sports Network.
