Greg Bell commit: What does it mean for Nebraska?

The early signing period continues to be good for Nebraska as the Huskers landed the signature of running back Greg Bell on Wednesday.

The 6-foot, 200-pound playmaker out of Yuma (Ariz.) Arizona Western C.C. becomes NU's 14th known commitment in its 2018 recruiting class.

Here are some quick takes on what Bell's commit means for Nebraska.

1. Nebraska's ability to close well on its top recruiting targets under new head coach Scott Frost has continued with the addition of two-time NJCAA first team All-American running back Greg Bell out of Arizona Western C.C. The Huskers edged out Tennessee in a tough battle for the top-ranked JUCO running back.

2. Bell becomes the first running back in Nebraska's 2018 recruiting class and the third overall JUCO player in the class. The Huskers' ground game was sporatic at best over the last three years and Bell should have a chance to make an immediate impact once he arrives on campus in January as a 3-for-2 transfer.

3. On film Bell shows tremendous burst and acceleration. He also shows nice top end speed which allows him to breakaway from defenders making him a home run threat, something NU has lacked as of late.

4. Bell runs with excellent body lean and for as much speed as he has he always seems to be in control. He shows good change of direction and the ability to put his foot in the ground get up field in a hurry.

5. Bell is very elusive. He not only shows the ability to shake a defender, but almost seems slippery with the way he can get small and not give defenders a big target to hit. There are times where he seems to disappear in the pile then suddenly bursts out for big gains.

"He reminds me of Damien Williams of the Miami Dolphins who played for us here too,” Arizona Western head coach Tom Minnick said about Bell. “His nickname is the eel. He can get through small cracks, run through people, catch the ball – just an all-around great football player."

6. As Minnick said, Bell's versatility in the passing game are also impressive. He shows the ability to catch well out of the backfield and one thing that stood out to me was he always seems to look for the first down marker after making a catch and getting up field. Perhaps most importantly, Bell's film shows his ability and overall willingness to pass protect for the quarterback, something you don't always get a good feel for out of running back prospects.

7. The Huskers are getting a super productive player and a proven winner in Bell. As mentioned, he's a two-time JUCO All-American that rushed for 1,187 yards and seven touchdowns in his freshman season and followed that up by rushing for 1,217 yards and 11 scores this past season. As a senior in high school, Bell had 320 carries for 2, 632 yards and 33 touchdowns leading his Chula Vista (Calif.) Bonita Vista squad to its first CIF title in 49 years. He also helped Arizona Western reach the JUCO National Championship game this past season.
