Five burning questions on 'coaching search week'

Nebraska is in the midst of trying to hire their fifth head football coach since the retirement of Tom Osborne following the 1997 season.

As we sit in this familiar week we've experienced several times since 2003, here are five burning questions.

All signs continue to point to former Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost to be the Huskers next head coach.

1 - Is it as simple as Scott Frost is the guy?

As we sit on Monday, is it as simple as Scott Frost being the guy for Nebraska? It sure seems that way.

The jobs that were potential threats to take Frost, particularly Florida are no longer on the table.

Bill Moos's confidence about the situation on Saturday also made it obvious he's got a good handle on things.

Then lastly, those that know Frost well in Lincoln aren't saying anything, which tells you they feel good about the situation.

It's just a matter of letting Frost have this last week in Orlando and coaching the AAC championship game against Memphis and handling things on his terms.

2 - Can this state and the media be patient enough to let this play out for a week?

On Sunday night we saw one local Omaha TV station go to Scott Frost's parent's house for a comment about the situation.

They obviously gave a "no comment," which is to be expected. After that report aired last night, multiple different people commented: "it's going to be a long week in the state of Nebraska."

It will be interesting to see how many more rouge reports come out of the woodwork this week about Frost and Nebraska.

3 - What kind of stock can you put into the emotional player reaction?

When a coaching change happens, it's natural to see players take their emotion to social media.

Over the last 48 hours, players like Stanley Morgan Jr., JD Spielman and Lamar Jackson all expressed their thoughts about the situation, and publicly put it out there that they are weighing their options.

It's very easy to get worked up about this type of stuff, but I believe every player will meet with the new staff before ultimately making a decision on their future.

Nebraska should be and will always be much bigger than one assistant coach or one particular player.

4 - When will we hear something about Tanner Lee's future?

Following Friday's game against Iowa, and Saturday morning firing of Mike Riley, quarterback Tanner Lee was asked about his future plans.

Like the pro that he is, Lee said he hasn't even thought about that at this point. I'm sure it's on Lee's mind right now, but he has until Jan. 15 until he has to decide on if he wants to enter the draft.

So if you are Lee, there's no need to rush to judgment. He can let things play out here, get his grade back from the College Advisory Committee and then make the decision that's best for his future.

5 - What will this week bring in recruiting?

Coaches started hitting the road on Sunday night across the country in anticipation of the Dec. 20 signing day.

That's probably the toughest part of the process for Nebraska to sit there for an entire week and watch their commits get visited by other teams trying to swoop in.

I'm sure Moos fully realized all of this. I wrote this on Saturday, and I'll say it again, the fact Moos is not even sending out Trent Bray this week on the road to keep relations with recruits tells you NU has a pretty good idea of what they are doing.

This will not be the 40-day search of 2003-2004 where Bill Callahan had two weeks to fill a recruiting class.
