Top 2006 Fall camp storylines
Will Beck emerge as the No. 2 QB?
Between sophomores Harrison Beck and Joe Ganz somebody needs to become the clear No. 2 quarterback of this football team in fall camp.
Beck needs to ignore the critics this August by using his natural abilities to win the No. 2 job from Ganz. Another thing to watch closely with Beck will be his shoulder injury. Beck is said to be 100 percent, when practice starts we should know if that's true right away.
The running back battle
Nobody may have a tougher job in the month of August than running back's coach Randy Jordan.
The third-year position coach and retired NFL veteran must find a way to work in a line-up of five running backs that could play for almost any team in the country.
There's no doubt Jordan will continue with what he has called "the committee" approach, but this year's table may not have enough chairs to fit all of his running backs.
"We have a system here and I believe in it," Jordan said after the spring game. "It's the committee system and we role with the one that's hot. It allows them to stay fresh throughout the game."
Heading into fall camp, sophomores Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn will go in with an early leg up on the competition, but juniors Kenny Wilson and Brandon Jackson and sophomore Leon Jackson are all in the fight with them…who will win the battle?
JUCO players should make impact
The real star power in this year's recruiting class came from the JUCO level. Running back Kenny Wilson, wide receiver Maurice Purify, cornerback Andre Jones and offensive lineman Carl Nicks are all expected to come into camp and fight for two-deep playing time immediately.
Wilson was rated the No. 1 JUCO running back in the country, Purify the No. 1 receiver, Jones the No. 1 defensive back and Nicks the No. 1 offensive tackle.
It should be fun to watch this group of JUCO's step in and make their impact this August. The nice thing for Wilson and Jones is they've been in Lincoln since May working out with the team, the so the learning curve shouldn't be as much for them.
How will Herian bounce back?
A realistic expectation for senior tight end Matt Herian this fall will be 25 to 30 catches. If Nebraska can get that type of production out of Herian, it would no doubt be a major upgrade at tight end compared to what the Huskers got a year ago.
Other names to watch closely in camp are junior Josh Mueller, sophomore Justin Tomerlin and freshman Mike McNeill. All three of these players have the ability to shake things up in camp.
