Nebraska added commitment No. 11 and arguably head coach Scott Frost's most important thus far for his 2018 class as Rivals250 quarterback Adrian Martinez out of Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West announced his decision to commit to the Huskers.
Here are some quick takes and analysis on what Martinez's commitment means to the Huskers.
1. It's important to land the right quarterback whenever there's a coaching change that involves a transition into a new offense. Scott Frost landed his in Martinez. The California signal-caller was priority No. 1 for Frost from the moment he accepted the Nebraska job and he was able to close the deal in just over a week's time. Not only did the Huskers get Martinez, a Rivals250 member, to flip from Tennessee, but they've landed a prospect that had offers from every major conference in the country including the likes of Alabama and Oklahoma to name a few.
2. Finding true dual-threat quarterbacks is very hard to do. Usually they are run first, pass second athletes or pocket passers that have above average mobility. Very rarely do you see a prospect that can do both as well as Martinez can. As a passer, he has efficient mechanics with a quick release which can be hard to come by from most dual-threat quarterbacks.
3. Martinez's arm strength is impressive. He can push the ball down the field vertically or throw an out route from the far hash with ease. He doesn't have a long wind-up or labor to put zip on his passes when throwing deep. He can make all the throws that will be required of him in Frost's offense.
4. Martinez is an extremely accurate passer. He shows the ability to make smart, quick decisions with the football. As a junior, he completed 220 of 366 attempts (60%) for 2,562 yards and 25 touchdowns to only four interceptions. He does a nice job of anticipating where his receivers will be and delivering the ball where only they can catch it.
5. Not only can Martinez deliver a nice, accurate pass from the pocket, but he can also do it while on the run. Having an offense that uses run-pass options becomes much more dangerous when the trigger-man can run, pass, and pass on the run.
6. We've talked a lot about Martinez's ability as a passer, but his legs are what adds a whole other dimension to his game. He's not a guy that can just move the chains, he's a player that has the speed to rip off huge chunks of yardage at a time. He shows good vision as a runner and at 6-foot-3, 198-pounds he's got the frame to be more than capable of taking hits in the Big Ten as a ball carrier. As a junior, Martinez had 182 carries for 1,462 yards and 14 touchdowns.
7. Last but not least, Martinez has the intangible qualities you look for out of a quarterback. He's a leader, he's smart, a competitor and he loves the game of football. You can tell just by talking with him that he's a quarterback. The added bonus for Nebraska in landing Martinez is that he will be signing on December 20 and will be on campus in January as an early enrollee. So he will be able to go through spring football.
*Note: Martinez did not play his senior season due to a torn labrum.
