For the second consecutive spring Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan and Athletic Director Steve Pederson got exactly what they wanted.
A spring game record crowd of 63,416 people filled Memorial Stadium to watch a Zac Taylor led White squad win in dominating fashion by a score of 42-14.
"Today's game was invaluable in so many ways," Callahan said. "We had the opportunity to get in a game like situation that I felt was totally invaluable in so many senses."
Taylor set a spring game record with 357 passing yards, and he did all of this in only two quarters of play.
The junior college transfer finished 20-of-27 with three touchdown passes, two of which were to sophomore wide receiver Terrence Nunn.
"If we haven't had this (spring game) I wouldn't have known what to expect going into the Maine game," Taylor said. "This was huge for me to get to play in front of all these people. It was kind of like a home game.
"For me it was unlike anything I ever played in and it will go a long way in helping us get ready for the fall."
Defensively, NU was led by the play of their front four. Junior defensive end Jay Moore led the Huskers with four quarterback sacks, as the White squad finished the day with 11 overall.
Callahan said solid play up front was one of the more consistent things he saw all spring.
"I thought our pass rush looked very strong today," Callahan said. "Our front four applied the pressure we were looking for."
Now heading into the fall the major question that remains is how Callahan will plug in his stellar 2005 signing class.
"We have so many other players that will join us in the fall," Callahan said. "This has been an ongoing evaluation for our team.
"I think the big thing is we keep working towards consistency. We are still not there yet. We are getting there and we made improvements at several positions, but to single out any positions is something I can't real evaluate until August."
