Huskers' schedule taking shape with new neutral site addition

Nebraska’s 2018-19 schedule is quickly taking shape, and head coach Tim Miles gave a hint of another addition to the non-conference slate on Wednesday night.

During an interview on the Husker Sports Network’s “Sports Nightly” radio show, Miles said the Huskers would soon be announcing a neutral site game against an undisclosed opponent in Sioux Falls, S.D.

While it’s unclear who NU will be playing or even what venue the game will be held, the coming news is another sign that Nebraska is making it a point to beef up its non-conference slate to prevent a repeat of last season’s NCAA Tournament omission.

“We’ve been working with various consultants to make sure we get the best schedule that we can,” Miles said. “The problem is you don’t know what the parameters are picking the NCAA Tournament next year. So we think we’re in pretty good shape...

“I believe that we have a pretty good idea of what instruments they’re going to use, and we’re trying to gauge our schedule accordingly,” Miles said.

When the Sioux Falls game is announced, it will leave the Huskers with three open spots to fill in their expected overall 31-game schedule.

The Big Ten is moving to a 20-game schedule this year, and NU already has non-conference home tilts set vs. Seton Hall (Gavitt Games) and Creighton.

There are also two games at the CBE Classic in Kansas City (Texas Tech, USC, and Missouri State are also in the field) in addition to two additional non-Power Six home games as part of the tournament.

Nebraska is still awaiting its draw in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which could be either home or away.

It should be noted that the NCAA moved up the start of the season three days from Friday, Nov. 9, to Tuesday, Nov. 6. The idea was to better space out power conference schedules and provide a mandatory consecutive three-day break over the holidays between Dec. 21-25, which will be determined by the schools.

“Right now I think we’re going to have about 25 high-major games, which is a lot. Maybe even 26," Miles said. “So it’ll be one of those years where our schedule should be strong enough to be able to win 19 or 20 and be in the NCAA Tournament, because I can’t stand winning 22 and not getting in.”
