Huskers make good impression on juco recruits

It was a big weekend for Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler and his coaching staff, as two junior college recruits made their way to Lincoln for official visits.

Guards Dylan Talley of Blinn (Texas) Community College and Matt Glover of Sheridan (Wyo.) Community College both toured Nebraska for the first time, and both had nothing but good things to say about their visits.

"It was nice up there," Talley said. "I enjoyed it. I got a chance to meet the players and the coaches and everybody on the campus like that. I definitely enjoyed myself up there."

Talley, who also has offers from LSU, Colorado, USC, Tennessee, Gonzaga, Seton Hall and a slew of others, came into his visit with Nebraska and LSU standing as the only two schools he was really considering.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound combo guard led Blinn with 22.5 ppg on 49% shooting from the floor last season to go along with 6.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

He said he plans on visiting LSU next weekend, and he expects to make a decision within a couple weeks after that. After getting a feel for what Sadler and the Huskers were all about, though, Talley said at this point Nebraska was at the top of his list.

"Right now, this is the first visit I've taken, but after this I can definitely see myself going there and playing for Coach Sadler," Talley said. "I like him. He's a real cool coach. He let me know that he's going to be tough on me in practice and I'm going to have to earn everything I get, but I definitely enjoyed my time up there in Lincoln. I could see myself playing for coach and going there."

Talley said the two biggest topics during his visit were Nebraska's strong academic support system for student-athletes and how he would fit in with the Huskers should he decide to play for NU.

"They just explained to me about their academics and stuff like that, how they're going to give me tutors and everything I need to be successful in the classroom," Talley said. "They talked to me about how they see me fitting into the offense. They want me to play some one, some two, because I can really score on the wing. They said I could bring a lot of scoring to the team and create my own shot and penetrate and make everybody else better."

Glover seemed just as impressed with his visit, as he said the level of talent at Nebraska and the school's emphasis on academics were two of the big selling points for him. The 6-4, 190, native of Orange, Calif., who is being recruited by NU as a point guard, will have three years of eligibility remaining.

He averaged 12 points, five rebounds and four assists per game for Sheridan last season, but he scored more than 19 a game during his senior year of high school.

"It was good," Glover said. "I liked the school and everything they had to offer academic wise and all the stuff they had to offer with the new (practice) facility that they're going to build. I liked it.

"Just the competition level and how all the players are all really good. You're going to have to compete for everything, so I liked that. You have to be surrounded by good players if you're going to get better."

Like Talley, Glover said he was in no rush to make a decision on his new school. He also has an offer from Utah State, where he visited last weekend. Glover has also received interest from the likes of Iowa, Rutgers, South Carolina, Kansas State, Idaho, Long Beach State, and Hawaii.

For now, Glover said he plans on going back to Sheridan to talk things over with his coach, Steve Smiley, and his family. Both Glover and Talley have until the end of the spring signing period, which runs from April 13 to May 18, to make their decisions. However, he said the Huskers are definitely in his top-3 list of schools at this point, if not No. 1.

"They've definitely moved up," Glover said. "They're up there at the top."

The Huskers have another juco visitor lined up for this weekend in 25-year old wing Anthony Hubbard of Frederick (Md.) Community College. Hubbard also has offers from Penn State, Iowa, Iona and Jacksonville, and he averaged 20.7 points and 10.1 rebounds while shooting 64.1 percent last season.
