Jerod Haase from the University of North Carolina. He's been on Roy's staff for 9 years, played at KU (most will remember him), currently the HC for their JV team (yes NC still has a Junior Varsity program), his wife is from KS and he's one of the top recruiters for not just NC but in the nation as a whole.

Doc is not the answer folks - never to early to wish and dream.
12/4 8:02 PM | IP: Logged I am beginning to think it is time for doc to go. I did not think that until last years, last game. doc cannot win on the road, he has to his credit made the home court an advantage, but he cannot win big game, even the ones he is suppose to win. oregon, wakeforest, cregition. 2 of the 3 are winnable games, not a win amoung any of them. if this trend contiunes doc is going to have to go.

Posted on 12/4 10:01 PM | IP: Logged

At this point.....anyone but Doc.

Posted on 12/5 10:21 PM | IP: Logged

Roy would prolly strongly discourage Jared from taking the NU job IMO. I remember him at KU. Very gritty, tough nosed player.

Rick Majerus - Name Coach

Posted on 12/8 11:18 AM | IP: Logged

I was thinkin the same thing, or we might wait until the end of the season as see who is available.

you are right there, i just wonder how the new facilities will factor in the ablity to land a good coach and better recruits.

Posted on 12/11 2:21 PM | IP: Logged

I know I am probably the minority here, but I am still a Doc supporter and I hope he doesnt get fired

Posted on 12/11 4:20 PM | IP: Logged

I think Doc is a great guy, but he's not the right fit for us. You can score 50 points a game and still recruit top talent as long as you win (Wisconsin), but scoring 50 points a game and losing will get you no where.

Posted on 12/12 7:11 PM | IP: Logged

This is a silly hypothetical because I don't see Dr. Tom throwing this type of money around, but just for craps and giggles let's play:

IMO, NU basketball's facilities and the new Arena will make this job more attractive than some people might think. However, that's still only half the battle. I think the only way NU can compete nationally in basketball is if they get a guy with AAU connections. Osborne has been on record stating he's not a fan of the AAU scene. Perhaps that would sway him from making that type of hire.

If NU was willing to open up the pocket book towards the 2 million dollar range per year, could they attract a guy like Josh Pastner from Memphis or another current Head Coach, (who is not coaching for one of college basketball's elite programs)?

A guy like Pastner makes 1.7 million per year. Maybe he wouldn't ever leave a school like Memphis for a program like Nebraska. But a guy like Pastner could've brought in high level recruits to the current Husker facilities. Imagine what he could do with the new practice facility and Arena at his disposal.

Is Nebraska willing to pay a proven head coach with recruiting connections? If the answer is no, then I don't believe any coach can win here.

Posted on 12/13 5:20 PM | IP: Logged

I hope TO opens up the checkbook for the next head coach. In addition, he needs to be more thorough than Pederson was during the hiring process of Sadler. Guys like Randy Bennett (who did interview at the time) and Gregg Marshall could have been had during the last go-around. The mid-majors have been protecting themselves in recent years by signing their current coaches to lengthy extensions with larger buyout clauses. So, the pool of current head coaches who may be interested has decreased. Throughout the course of this season, we will be able to see some "up and coming" head coaches who have made names for themselves at various levels and have established themselves as serious recruiters. Unfortunately, the guys from recent seasons (Mooney, Marshall, Bennett, Jacobsen, Smart etc.) have signed substantial extensions with their current schools. So, just throwing a few names out there who I think would be interested: Tim Miles at CSU, Blaine Taylor at Old Dominion, just to name a couple.

I don't believe that they could get a guy like Pastner. Those kind of guys have connections and realize that location is everything. It would be difficult to match his level of recruiting at a place like Nebraska with a bad location, cold weather and no tradition.

The first question coaches ask when they look at a open job is: Can I win there? And everyone says no to that question when it is asked about Nebraska. And by "win" I don't mean put together a Doc Sadler non-conference schedule and have a winning season, I mean can NU win the Big 10 and get to the Elite 8. The answer is "no". Sure, it COULD actually happen someday, but it's way too difficult for a hot commodity to want to take a chance on this kind of a job.

No offense, but weather has nothing to do with College basketball recruiting. If weather was an issue, every SEC school would be dominant in college basketball and Kansas, Wisconsin, Pitt, Marquette, G-town, UCONN, and Syracuse would never be successful in basketball.

IMO, the only coach who could win at Nebraska is a guy like Pastner with his recruiting connections. When NU gets the new Arena built to go along with the practice facility, Nebraska basketball will have the top basketball facilities in the country. However, they will need a top flight recruiter with AAU connections just to get those kids in Lincoln to see IT for themselves. Then, and maybe then, those kids will think twice about Nebraska. But if a guy similar to Doc Sadler or a guy with good X's and O's, but no connections comes in, Nebraska will never be able to attract difference makers facilities or not.

We'll have to see how this season plays out, but can you imagine where this team would be w/out Bo Spencer? And Doc didn't recruit him, an assistant did. I honestly don't think we'll win more than four games in the BIG - maybe not that many. And if it gets that ugly, extension or not, we've GOT to make a move. Lord knows Doc's tried hard, he just seems to be over his head at this level.

BUT - we absolutely do NOT need to settle when it comes to hoops! And I don't think we should consider anyone other than a very, very successful mid-major guy - who can flat out recruit his ass off. Gregg Marshall as Wichita State is a great example someone mentioned above. He clearly is a better floor coach than Doc, and if you saw who he's been able to get to a far inferior campus, you've gotta believe a guy like that could be even better at NU. But Nebraska's GOT to get a guy in here who is a proven D-I winner, albeit probably at the mid-major level.

Posted on 12/14 8:52 PM | IP: Logged

If you're right, woodman, and we win 4 or fewer games in the B1G this year, with Doc's most talented team in six seasons, then I would have to agree, it would be time to make a change. I suspect Doc would agree as well.

Embarrasing performance tonight - 4 games will be a stretch.

Posted on 12/27 10:43 PM | IP: Logged

I vaguely remember when Van Horn was hired for baseball the AD put together a great search committee. Hiring a basketball coach for Nebraska will take an excellent search. Would the likes of Piatkowski, Strickland and Hoppen plus others be the kind of people who could help Nebraska find and attract a coach who can come in here and get the job done?

Posted on 12/31 4:29 PM | IP: Logged

Gonna come down to cash and how much they want to spend.

Posted on 12/31 5:35 PM | IP: Logged

Tom Osborne needs to hire Tom Izzo.

Posted on 12/31 6:50 PM | IP: Logged

I thought Doc might be able to make your program respectable but that just isn't going to happen. With the new diggs that NU has now and will be moving into for games I think the program needs a new face for the new arena.

I might be wrong, but I believe that Van Horn was choice #3 of that search committee.

Bruce Pearl. He would bring a passion and excitement that would help accentuate the "sexiness" of the new facilities. He would also bring, without passing any judgment, some recruiting methods which resemble those of Calipari and Frank Martin.

My fear is that Osborne would never hire him because he's not a Christian zealot and has baggage. Me?? I could care less, I just pine for a day that I can get excited about Nebraska basketball again. It's been SO long since Depreis Owens was throwing down two hand dunks and Chris Creswell was bombing three's.

Bruce Pearl!!!

If you replace your coach get somebody that can recruit Indiana and Illinois. Indy has a ton of talent that is college ready.

Posted on 1/8 5:14 PM | IP: Logged

Steve Fisher would be worth at least a look.

Posted on 1/11 10:35 AM | IP: Logged

He's not a Christian "zealot"? Doesn't zealot mean fanatical? Integrity, honorable, respectful, faith-based, humble ....those are just a few descriptions that I would use with Tom Osborne, but zealot wouldn't be one of them....GBR.

A quick look at the coaches Tom Osborne has hired... stop me when I hit on a "Christian zealot"; Bo Pelini, Darin Erstad....

Posted on 1/14 8:59 AM | IP: Logged

You know exactly what I was getting at.

Posted on 1/16 10:19 PM | IP: Logged

zelots: were first centuary jewish citiziens who would take up arms and fight against the oppression of the roman empire. They did not care if you were Jews or Romans. If you sided with rome then you were the enemy. watch out. now does that sound like Tom osborne or any of the other christians on the staff at NU.

Posted on 1/17 2:11 PM | IP: Logged

Might as well refresh this thread - we're getting a new coach.

Posted on 2/7 9:56 PM | IP: Logged

The bad news for Doc is I hate to see anyone lose a job, but college basketball is big business and NU isn't even on the map right now. Obviously the new contract and ridiculous buy-out clause was a huge mi$take. I'll never understand the rationale there. I'm sure Doc is a great-guy, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,, this is business and the fact is he's costing the school money. The good news for Doc is Obama said he created 250,000 new jobs last month.

Posted on 2/8 8:30 AM | IP: Logged

Big Red basketball must be a dead issue. Six hours later and 0 responses to my first reply. Didn't even get anyone's ire. One would tend to get the opinion that no one cares.

Posted on 2/8 2:48 PM | IP: Logged

I hear Todd Lickliter is available.

Just kidding, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Posted on 2/8 10:33 PM | IP: Logged

At this point I almost don't even care who we bring in. I just want my eyes to stop bleeding from watching this team struggle to put up 40 points at home.

Posted on 2/9 12:35 PM | IP: Logged

I hear that after Doc is fired, that TO is going to go after Dana Altman. It makes a lot of sense considering that Dana is a Nebraska Native (Osborne loves keeping things in the Nebraska family). The only question is would Dana leave Nike U?

Posted on 2/9 8:58 PM | IP: Logged

I heard the same thing, and the rumor mill says he's not stoked about being in Eugene.

Maybe Dana will say, "I'll take the job, but only if you can get butts in the seats like they did at the Qwest; and that will take selling beer."

Did I say "maybe"? I meant "hopefully." Does everyone that was at the Michigan game or that watched on TV know that that game was supposed to be a "Red Out?" Thank God the bleachers and seats are red! That includes the student section.

Posted on 2/10 4:07 PM | IP: Logged

the only way you fire doc at this point is if someone better is availible? If Dana is available, the I say go for it. I can see dana wanting out of Eugune, the family life is not at all like the Midwes. I say this as i sit just north of San Franscico. They are very liberal in Oregon and Eugune particularly.

Posted on 2/10 5:41 PM | IP: Logged

You guys aren't talking about the supposed 5 year 2.2M offer where Altman can name all his assistants but has to hire Strickland are you?

I haven't heard one credible source say that has any truth whatsoever.

Oh, I think everyone would love to have Doc here and winning, but the two concepts are mutually exclusive to each other. Is there any reason to suspect that the future is going to change? Doc may have said that he isn't feeling any heat, that probably is true because his future is in someone else's hands at this point. The only thing he can do to cement it is to continue to have embarrassing losses.

I have heard him say, things happen for a reason, well I hope he believes that. I am not sure what his reason is, but I am sure it is not at Nebraska.

Posted on 2/11 11:34 AM | IP: Logged

Ditto on the Bruce Pearl; please!!!

Posted on 2/11 12:22 PM | IP: Logged

I believe Bruce is out of coaching for 4 more years. I think he was given a 5 year ban unless a school could prove they needed to hire him with cause.

If that is the case you might as well just keep doc for one more year. I don't think Dana would want to leave so early from his current position, if his team is struggling after next year then maybe but I think it is too soon for him to pull the plug on the ducks.

Posted on 2/11 3:31 PM | IP: Logged

The best next head coach NU can get is....................... Doc Sadler!! I'm pretty sure Roy Williams and the Coach K's of the world are just waiting for Nebraska coaching position become available!!

Posted on 2/11 6:43 PM | IP: Logged

idiots like you are why Nebraska sucks right now! Anyone would be better than this joker. You settle mediocrity you will be mediocre.

Agreed. Doc is brutal and has zero business leading our basketball program. This has nothing to do with the new arena or not - he is not right for Nebraska and we will never compete in the Big Ten under his direction. His comments get more ridiculous by the day and it's truly evident that his he's lost his players. He was unable to land in-state players like Hill, Eliasen, Gessell or even consider the four players currently on the CSU roster.

Anyone who thinks he should stay really needs to reconsider their expectations as a school to the alumni and fan base. We are no longer competitive. I am not talking about being competitive to get into the tourney, within the upper conference teams...........I am talking about being competitive on any level.

I feel bad for the current roster. Any other coach would have this team very competitive within a conference. Doc must go.

Posted on 2/12 9:49 PM | IP: Logged

absolutely right......

Posted on 2/12 11:17 PM | IP: Logged

Alldayred sure knows basketball...lmao! If doc is the best we can do, please just cut the program.
