Nebraska has reached the point in Fall Camp where some serious personnel decisions have to be made for the 2016 season.

In this week's 3-2-1 column, we breakdown some of those tough decisions that might be facing head coach Mike Riley and his staff.

THREE THINGS WE LEARNED

1 - Riley not rushing to a decision on Keith Williams situation

This has obviously been a very difficult month for the Nebraska football program when you factor in the loss of punter Sam Foltz and now the latest incident with wide receivers coach Keith Williams. Head coach Mike Riley has a very difficult decision in front of him now about the future of Williams after he picked up his third DUI since 2004 this past Sunday.

It's clear Riley is letting things settle before making a decision on Williams' future and how things will be handled. I don't think Williams will lose his job, but I expect some sort of punishment to come down for this incident.

2 - The defensive tackle position is further ahead than expected

Probably my biggest takeaway from this past Saturday's scrimmage was how impressive Nebraska's defensive tackles held up, particularly Kevin Maurice and Mick Stoltenberg. They more than held their own against the No. 1 offensive line and did a nice job of taking away the inside run.

When you factor in Carlos and Khalil Davis, the Huskers have a solid four-man rotation going into the season at defensive tackle. Defensive end though still remains a big question for me.

3 - Tanner Lee looks like the front runner to win the 2017 QB job

After watching quarterback Tanner Lee live in action on Saturday, it's clear he's got something special about him. I'm guessing everybody was excited about Lee getting additional year of eligibility other than freshman quarterback Patrick O'Brien.

It's amazing how Lee fell into the lap of Nebraska because of a connection NU had with him through Williams when he coached at Tulane. Lee's father Phillip said a lot of teams shied away from taking his transfer because of the unknown if he'd get the second year of eligibility. One of those teams was LSU.

Lee was a 3,600 yard passer at Tulane over two seasons, and he has great arm talent and a solid feel for the position. If you were to ask me right now, Lee is the front runner to be the Huskers starting quarterback in 2017, but there's a lot of time for O'Brien to make his case and get better.

TWO QUESTIONS

1 - How will Nebraska use De'Mornay Pierson-El?

I'm still waiting for that moment where I say "De'Mornay Pierson-El is back." It hasn't happened yet in Fall Camp, and as we get closer to the season opener you wonder what type of role he'll play in the Huskers offense in 2016? His punt return role is also up for grabs between him, Jordan Westerkamp and Stanley Morgan Jr.

2 - When and how will captains be announced?

One thing Riley still hasn't announced yet is when and how he will announce captains in 2016? From what I'm hearing, expect there to be four permanent captains and Sam Foltz being the fifth honorary captain.

The biggest thing Riley doesn't want to do is rush into this. By naming captains so early a year ago they missed the boat by not having a guy like Andy Janovich a captain, when in all reality he should've been.

ONE PREDICTION: Tre Bryant is the best freshman running back since Abdullah

I'm of the belief that in most cases you know if a running back is going to be a difference maker almost from Day 1. There are just some natural instincts it takes to play the running back position you can't coach. We saw that from guys like Ameer Abdullah, Cory Ross, Roy Helu Jr. and Brandon Jackson from the minute they stepped on campus.

We are seeing that same type of flash right now in Fall Camp from freshman running back Tre Bryant. He has an "it" factor you can't coach. He showed that in the scrimmage this past Saturday.

This staff is really trying to wrap their head around how they can work Bryant into the running back formula when they already have so much established returning talent. I'll say this, Bryant is the best freshman back I've see at NU since Abdullah. If he stays healthy, he has a chance to be a star in this program.
