Just two days after officially picking up a Nebraska offer, 2018 Platteview (Neb.) center Brady Heiman put an end to his recruitment by announcing his commitment to the Huskers last Tuesday night.
HuskerOnline.com caught up with the 6-foot-10, 197-pound Heiman to get his thoughts on his decision and what his expectations are moving forward…
HOL: Things definitely seemed to move pretty quickly for you from picking up the offer from Nebraska on Sunday and committing on Tuesday. Take us through that process and what inevitably led to you knowing you wanted to be a Husker?
“As soon as I picked up the offer, I knew almost immediately that’s what I wanted to do. I had the Creighton meeting (on Monday) already set up, so when I went to Creighton, honestly, if they would have offered (for 2018), I’m 99-percent sure I still would have went to Nebraska.
“For me, Nebraska just felt like the right fit. I like the coaching staff, and I think they have every tool to make me the best player that I can be.”
When did you actually inform Nebraska’s coaching staff of your decision? What was their reaction?
“I called Coach Miles (Tuesday) morning. He was really happy. He let out a little yell. It was good.”
If you hadn’t heard already, you just became the first instate high school commitment for Nebraska since 2001. Being a Nebraska kid who grew up a Husker fan, what does it mean to you to play for your home state school?
“A lot of expectations come with it. I think for me, it’s just going to be more doing my own thing, playing the way I know I can play, practicing the way I have to to get ready for all that comes with it.”
Now that you have your recruitment wrapped up, how are you approaching your senior season at Platteview? Do you plan on getting a jump on preparing for Nebraska?
“We’re about to start up lifting again, which gets us ready for the high season, but I’m also going to try to start putting on weight for college."
Has Nebraska talked to you about getting you on their own strength and conditioning/nutrition programs?
“Not yet. I’m still talking with them. It’s only been a couple days (since committing), so I’m still talking with them a lot about some different things.”
What are your feeling about potentially redshirting your first season at Nebraska if you need more time to get bulk up and develop your game?
“I’m not against a redshirt at all. I think it would help my body develop. But I think you have to go in preparing like you’re going to play, so you have to go in working hard and all that stuff.”
You’re probably going to be somewhat of a marked man this season being one of the state’s few high-major commits. Are you ready for the spotlight that comes with being a Nebraska commit?
“I know I’m going to get everyone’s best shot every night in high school, so if we can go and win a state championship, it’s going to mean it, because people are going to come after us the most.”
