Huskers land the big one

Matt Farniok has the distinction of being the recruit in this Class of 2016 who Nebraska pursued the longest and the hardest, going back through two coaching staffs, and it finally paid off Wednesday evening when he committed to NU.

Coaches Mike Riley, Danny Langsdorf and Mike Cavanaugh conducted the last in-home visit with the U.S. Army All-American today, and toward the end of the evening Farniok delivered the good news to the Husker staff.

“It went really well,” Farniok said of the meeting. “I was just talking to them, and after we talked for a while, it really confirmed my feeling that I was making the right choice.”

Farniok was asked if he had been leaning in favor of Nebraska for a while or the decision came to him recently?

“It was kind of just a teeter-totter type of deal and came late in the finish, but about Tuesday night I started getting the feeling that [Nebraska] was my choice,” Farniok stated. “And then when we started talking tonight, I knew this was the right choice for me.”

Farniok let the suspense build for a while before he broke the good news to the assembled Husker coaches.

“We just talked for a little bit, and then probably close to the end I just told them [I was committing],” Farniok recounted. “They were all really happy! They were all excited and just wanted to welcome me to the Husker family and to Husker Nation.”

There were several major factors that made Farniok pick Nebraska over Iowa, Michigan State and all the rest of his offers, but in reality it came down to the relationships he had built during his several trips to Lincoln over the past couple of years.

“It really just felt right,” Farniok explained. “I liked the fans, I got along well with the players, and I got along well with the coaches. It was everything I wanted and, on top of it, it just felt right.

“It was really just the people. That was the biggest thing for me -- being around people you get along with and who you know you'll be successful with.”

Farniok said his goals for when he gets to Nebraska will be to "just keep getting better and then see what happens."

The newest Cornhusker commit had a message for the Nebraska's fans:

"Go big red!"
