Final take: Signing Martinez is Frost's biggest coup of the 2018 class

Before Scott Frost's plane even landed in Lincoln on Dec. 2, he made a scholarship offer to Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West quarterback Adrian Martinez.

Frost has been a part of the Chip Kelly style offense since 2009 at Oregon and knows the exact type of quarterback it takes it to run it. When he looks at Martinez, he's excited about the potential the four-star signal caller has in his offense.

"When I was evaluating quarterbacks for this class a long time ago, Adrian was my favorite guy in the country," Frost said of Martinez. "We didn't think we had a chance to get him at my previous school, but now getting to Nebraska, he was interested."

Martinez will be in Lincoln for the start of the second semester in January, which is also another bonus.

With a completely new offense, the talented freshman will be on equal footing with NU's other quarterbacks and have a chance to win the starting job in 2018.

"At every single position, the competition is going to start over because there's going to be a new set of coaches with new eyes on them," Frost said. "(Martinez) is going to have as good of an opportunity as anybody, but he's going to have to play better than the other kids on campus."

The other thing that jumps out about Martinez to Frost is his level of character.

When you talk to Martinez, he doesn't come off as your typical high school senior. He appears to be a very mature player ready for the challenge he's going to face at Nebraska.

"I just think he's a kid of really high character," Frost said. "I think he comes from a great family. I think they approached the recruiting process the right way. They gathered all the information they needed to gather in order to make a smart decision. I think they developed relationships with a lot of people, but I think at the end of the relationships we had with him, and the opportunity at Nebraska to play in our offense and be around us ended up winning.

"He's a kid I've gotten to know really well in a short amount of time, and I'm excited about him. I'm excited about spending time around him and his family - they are great people. That's what we want in the program. Not just good players, but high character kids."

Other takes from signing day

***Frost was pretty taken back on Wednesday by the lack of numbers Nebraska has on their scholarship distribution chart at both receiver and defensive back. NU only has four corners, five safeties and five scholarship receivers (when you take out holder Zack Darlington) returning in 2018.

"Numbers-wise, there are some big holes," Frost said. "There's a couple of positions where the number of scholarship players that we would normally want to carry at the University of Nebraska is way down on those numbers - receiver and defensive back are two of the most glaring ones. There's just not enough guys at those positions. Those are places we need to go to work and get some kids in just to make sure we have enough kids at those positions."

***The biggest advantage Frost had going into recruiting was taking his entire staff with him from Central Florida. It allowed them to hit the ground running.

"There's going to be big advantages of keeping people together," Frost said. "One of the advantages at Nebraska for a long time was continuity and people that understood the system, and the scheme and where they fit and what their role was. It's going to be a huge advantage for me to have people around me that already know our offense, defense and how we operate."

***Mike Riley tried to win at Nebraska without recruiting junior college players. I don't think we'll ever see a coach try going that route again. Nebraska needs to target two to four high-level JUCO players per season. Nebraska signed some real difference makers on Wednesday from the JUCO ranks.

***Because of the timing of several different announcements on Wednesday, Nebraska was one of only a few schools that didn't release an official list of signed players.
