Sources: Grissom suspended, Walker out for UTEP

Oklahoma has arrived in El Paso for their season opener against UTEP, but the travel squad is missing two more starters.

Multiple sources confirmed to SoonerScoop.com Friday evening, starting tight end Geneo Grissom has been suspended for the opener and did not make the trip with the team. Grissom was actually listed as a co-starter along with Taylor McNamara and Brannon Green on the school's official depth chart.

Stoops had talked about Grissom as the team's starter at tight end following the end of preseason camp.

On top of Grissom's absence, sources also confirmed starting defensive tackle Casey Walker has not made the trip to El Paso with the team. Stoops said he was "unsure" if Walker would be available this weekend when he met with media members Wednesday.

Stoops would not elaborate on Walker's situation, only to say it was a "personal issue" and confirmed his situation was not a football related injury.

Without Walker, the Sooners will turn to 285-pound defensive end David King to take over the starting defensive tackle spot opposite Jamarkus McFarland.

It is not known at this time if Walker will return this season.

The Sooners are already playing this season without starting center Ben Habern and starting offensive guard Tyler Evans. Habern gave up football after offseason neck surgery while Evans tore his ACL during preseason camp and will miss the 2012 season.

The Sooners are also missing starting defensive tackle Stacy McGee who has been indefinitely suspended along with wide receiver Jaz Reynolds and defensive backs Trey Franks and Quentin Hayes.

The indefinite suspensions of Reynolds, Franks and Hayes were announced alongside the news wide receiver Kameel Jackson had been dismissed from the program.

The Sooners will also be without the services of two potential contrubutors at defensive end as Chaz Nelson, a junior college transfer who arrived last spring, is sitting out with a sprained medial collateral ligament. P.L. Lindley, another backup defensive end, is also out this weekend with a high ankle sprain.

The Sooners also left wide receiver Jalen Saunders in Norman. Saunders has been awaiting a ruling from the NCAA which would allow him to play immediately following his transfer from Fresno State. It is not known if the NCAA has denied his waiver, or if he remained in Norman because a decision has yet to be handed down from the NCAA.
