Everman Wins Over Fiesty Arlington Seguin

EVERMAN- For one half at Marr Stadium it appeared the Arlington Seguin Cougars (0-4, 0-1) were poised to pull off a big upset to open District 8-4A play, but for the second season in a row a third quarter outburst turned the tide for Everman (3-1, 1-0).

In 2008, SHS trailed at home only 14-13 before Everman rattled off 22 third quarter points. This year it was a 21 point barrage that turned a 3-3 game in a 24-3 game as Everman eventually held off a late Cougars rally 24-10.

Arlington Seguin used a ball control offense to control the clock for most of the first half as SHS held the ball for nearly 18 minutes. The game's opening drive would prove fruitful for the Cougars as they took an early 3-0 on a 30 yard field goal by Jack Hayes. After forcing an Everman fumble near midfield on the Bulldogs first play the Cougars looked to threaten once again but the Everman defense was able to force a Seguin three and out.

Everman would respond with a methodical drive using mostly the running of Ruben Fletcher who would finish the night with 163 yards on the ground to tie things up. Sophomore kicker Daniel Cruz connected on a 25 yard field goal and after one quarter the game was tied at three.

Everman after forcing another Seguin three and out would move the ball to near midfield but an errant Robert Davis pass would get pickoff by Arlington Seguin DB Ciante Evans setting the Cougars up with a chance to take the lead with eight minutes left in the half.

The Cougars would move 35 yards into Everman territory and at the same chewing up nearly the remainder of the quarter but they failed to score as Hays was wide left on a 40 yard field goal and at the half we were tied up at three.

Everman would take the opening kickoff of the second half and come out with a purpose with an impressive drive that ended in a 48 yard touchdown run up the middle by Fletcher and the lead was 9-3 as the PAT was no good.

The Bulldogs defense would bow their neck and force a quick Seguin three and out before the ever dangerous James Bailey struck again as he has done running receiving and in special teams all season scoring this time on a 60 yard punt return for a score. Bailey would add the two point run and Everman led 17-3.

After sophomore DE Lincoln Richard nailed SHS QB Dorsey Griffin Everman would end up with great field position as the other sophomore DE for the Bulldogs Jacob Kennedy would recover. Cory Franklin who quietly ran for 78 yards on 11 carries would cap the drive with a 19 yard run and 24-3 Bulldogs edge heading to the fourth quarter.

Arlington Seguin would score with six minutes left to cut the lead to 24-10 as sophomore RB William Martin would score from seven yards out. Everman would nearly let Seguin back in the game with little more than three minutes left as Fletcher lost his second fumble of the game. Arlington Seguin was unable to capitalize on the turnover and Everman would hold and run the clock out for a hard fought 24-10 win.

Arlington Seguin has to be somewhat pleased leaving Marr Stadium having played Everman close, if not for an 8 minute stretch in the third quarter it's a nip and tuck game. Everman has to be concerned about the offense at this point, they had zero passing yards in this one. The passing game did not look sharp as Davis had no time to throw and when he did throw it was off his back foot. This will be something the Everman staff continues to try and develop as teams will continue to put nine in the box and dare the Bulldogs to throw.

Next week Everman visits rival Crowley while Arlington Seguin takes on Granbury.
