UVA at Southern Miss by the Numbers
Each week we break down the Golden Eagles game and pull out a few select numbers, stats and figures that while may not always have major impact on the game are still interesting tidbits.
Virginia 34 at Southern Miss 37
5 Billion - We usually don't work in numbers this large but the University of Virginia is one of the oldest, most prestigious, and respected public institutions in the nation. Their University Endowment is estimated to be around $5 billion after taking a $600 million loss in 2008.
31,170 - Fans saw what may have been one of the greatest Southern Miss comebacks in history and we suspect that years from now more will claim to have been there.
15,301 - Students. While not directly related enrollment numbers released this week show a record enrollment for the University of Southern Mississippi.
5,340 - Yards. Damion Fletcher adds to his school record of all-purpose yards with each touch.
1979 - Was the year that Southern Miss last overcame a 17-point second half deficient.
861 - Miles. The driving distance between the two campuses.
390 - The most yards surrendered by the Southern Miss defense in 2009.
281 - Southern Miss return specialists combined for 281 total return yards.
216 - Southern Miss running backs Damion Fletcher (115) and Tory Harrison (101) each surpassed the century mark in rushing yards in the game.
130 - Sophomore quarterback Austin Davis was plagued by dropped passes early in the contest but still managed to go 14 of 26 for 130 yards and a touchdown.
100 - Senior Freddie Parham field a second half kick-off two yards deep in the end zone and sprinted almost untouched in for the score. It will forever be the 2nd longest kick-return in Southern Miss history as the NCAA doesn't recognize those two yards in the Southern Miss end zone.
92 - The Golden Eagles were flagged 9 times for 92 yards during the game.
90 - Offensive plays for the Cavaliers, the most allowed by the Eagles this season.
78 - The Southern Miss defense held a heralded UVA rushing attack to just 79 yards on 43 attempts. It was the eight consecutive game that the Eagles have held an opponent under 100 yards rushing.
57 - Southern Miss back Harrison's game winning touchdown run of 57-yards put the Eagles up for the first time against the Cavaliers.
41 - Fletcher became the all-time rushing touchdown leader in Southern Miss history with his 40th and 41st career touchdowns on Saturday.
20 - Southern Miss earned 20 first downs against the Cavalier defense.
15 - Southern Miss linebackers Korey Williams and Ronnie Thornton each had 15 total tackles in the game.
7 - Southern Miss freshman All-American WR DeAndre Brown was shut down by UVA to the tune of two receptions for seven yards and a fumble.
6 - Very questionable calls made by the ACC crew led by referee Jerry Magallanes.
4 - The Southern Miss defense sacked UVA quarterback Jameel Sewell.
2 - True freshman Ryan Hanks hauled in the first two receptions of his Golden Eagle career, the first being a 2-yard reception for his first touchdown in the Black and Gold.
1 - Clipboard destroyed by head coach Larry Fedora after a suspect pass interference called on the Eagles in the waining minutes of the 4th quarter.
0 - Southern Miss fans that left M.M. Roberts Stadium disappointed after the game.
