Inside the numbers: New coaches split to start '09

Each week, we'll look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing.

Here is our offering after the opening week of the 2009 season.

1. New coaches went 11-11. The winners were Army's Rich Ellerson, Auburn's Gene Chizik, Boston College's Frank Spaziani, Bowling Green's Dave Clawson, Clemson's Dabo Swinney, Iowa State's Paul Rhoads, Kansas State's Bill Snyder, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, Purdue's Danny Hope, Tennessee's Lane Kiffin and Wyoming's Dave Christensen. The losers were Ball State's Stan Parrish, Eastern Michigan's Ron English, Miami of Ohio's Mike Haywood, New Mexico's Mike Locksley, New Mexico State's DeWayne Walker, Oregon's Chip Kelly, San Diego State's Brady Hoke, Syracuse's Doug Marrone, Toledo's Tim Beckman, Utah State's Gary Andersen and Washington's Steve Sarkisian.

2. Reaching the plateau. Thirty-nine players rushed for 100 yards, led by Purdue's Ralph Bolden with 234 (the only guy with more than 200). Nineteen players passed for 300 yards, led by Toledo's Aaron Opelt with 423 (ironically, Bolden and Purdue beat Opelt and Toledo). Thirty-four players had 100 yards in receptions, led by Notre Dame's Michael Floyd with 189. And 41 players made 10 tackles, led by UTEP safety Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith with 18.

3. Louisville needs help on third downs. Louisville was 1-for-9 on third-down conversions in its 30-10 victory over Indiana State, a Football Championship Subdivision team that has won once in the past four seasons. Utah State went 0-for-12 in its loss to Utah; the Aggies are the only team that played that failed to convert a third down.

4. Who needs to throw? Army had eight passing yards in its 27-14 victory at Eastern Michigan. The Black Knights were 2-for-5 passing; they ran for 300 yards.
