Greene wins the Doak Walker Award

Iowa's Shonn Greene has won the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the top running back in the nation. Former winner Tony Dorsett presented the junior with the trophy during ESPN's broadcast of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Florida on Thursday night.

The 5-foot-11, 235-pound Greene, who is from Sicklerville, New Jersey, won over fellow finalists Javon Ringer of Michigan State and Knowshon Moreno of Georgia, each of whom were also in attendance. After hearing his named called, the Hawkeye running back was quick to give credit to his offensive line during an interview on stage with ESPN's Chris Fowler.

"I mean I owe a lot of credit to my offensive line," Greene told Fowler. "They did a great job this season, so hats off to them. They got me where I am right now."

The Doak Walker Award is the latest honor in what has been a dream season for Greene, who was also named a first team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation today. Coming back to Iowa after spending a year at Kirkwood Community College in 2007, the junior rushed for a school record 1,729 yards and 17 touchdowns in leading the Hawkeyes to an 8-4 record this year. Following the season, Greene was named Big Ten offensive player of the year and won the Chicago Tribune's Silver Football, which is given annually to the conference's most valuable player.

Greene, who rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season, is the first Iowa player to ever win the Doak Walker Award, which originated in 1990. He is the fifth running back from the Big Ten to win, joining Chris Perry, Larry Johnson, Ron Dayne, and Eddie George.

Currently, Greene and the Hawkeyes are practicing for the Outback Bowl where they will play South Carolina on January 1 in Tampa, Florida.
