Flashes win finale

B.G. Walters recovered a Buffalo fumble in the end zone and Julian Edelman powered his way for a 12-yard gain on 3rd-and-11 to allow Kent State to run out the clock in the Golden Flashes 24-21 victory over the Bulls, the 2008 Mid-American Conference East Division champions.

Trailing by four with just over nine minutes left to play, Kent State (4-8, 3-5 in the MAC) went on an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 25-yard touchdown reception by Jon Simpson to take a 24-21 lead with 5:57 left in the game.

Buffalo advanced the ball to the Kent State seven where quarterback Drew Willy connected with Brett Hamlin, who was stripped of the ball by KSU linebacker Derek Burrell. Walters recovered the ball in the end zone and Kent State took over at the 20 with 1 minute, 46 seconds to go.

Edelman lost two yards on first down and Eugene Jarvis picked up two on third down to set up Edelman's heroics.

The Bulls called their final timeout before the play, hoping to stop the Flashes and force a punt. But, Edelman would have none of it. Met just beyond the line of scrimmage, Edelman carried several Bulls defenders with him until he backed his way past the first down marker. The Golden Flashes then ran out the clock for their fourth victory of the season.

Buffalo (7-5, 5-3 in the MAC) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to Willy's one-yard touchdown run. But, the Flashes quickly responded as Jarvis, who ended the night with 22 carries for 150 yards, tied the game with a 50-yard run.

Nate Reed booted a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give KSU a 10-7 lead at the break.

James Starks' three-yard run put Buffalo back on top, 14-10, but Jarvis again responded, this time with a 12-yard scoring run that ended a six-play, 75-yard drive.

Willy hit Naam Roosevelt on a 23-yard touchdown pass to give Buffalo a 17-14 lead with 9:11 left in the game.

But as they had done all night, the Golden Flashes again answered the Bulls' score.

Edelman completed 3-of-4 passes for 39 yards on the drive, including the scoring toss to Simpson. He also carried twice for 34 yards to set up the game-winner.

Thanks to the big games by Edelman and Jarvis, Kent State outrushed Buffalo, 312-145, and outgained the Bulls, 426-385.

Burrell led the KSU defense with 10 tackles.
