Tulsa moves into C-USA semifinals
Jerome Jordan had yet another monster game with 23 points and 17 rebounds on Thursday afternoon to lead the University of Tulsa to a 78-68 overtime upset over second-seeded UAB in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament.MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) --
Jordan also added five blocks to his performance as the Golden Hurricane (19-12) moved to the semifinals against either No. 3 seed Houston or UTEP.
Robert Vaden led the Blazers (22-10) with 15 points, but was 6-of-22 from the field. Reggie Huffman finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Channing Toney scored 12 points.
The game was tied at 60 in regulation after Vaden hit a 12-footer in the lane with 3.9 seconds remaining. But Tulsa seized its biggest lead of the game in the extra period and the Blazers were left to fire from outside the arc without success.
The Blazers were hindered by 40 percent shooting, including only 3-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Hurricane converted 45 percent of their shots.
"We had confidence in each other's ability," said Tulsa guard Ray Reese. "We believed, and it showed. We knew our defense would keep us in the game, and we just had to hit some shots. We were just confident."
Reese hit a crucial three-pointer in overtime that gave the Hurricane a small amount of breathing room.
"He's been playing great. He's been the difference in our run," TU head coach Doug Wojcik said of Reese. "He rebounds the basketball and takes a lot of pressure off of Ben [Uzoh]. He was really steady, and he really rebounded the ball for us. The one thing he can really do, if you give him some space, he can hit the three ball."
