Practice ends with big scrimmage

First year head coach Bob Toledo concluded his first fall camp yesterday as they wave wrapped up camp to the tune of a 75-play scrimmage.

"I think there were a lot of good individual plays. I thought Jeremy Williams made a couple of real nice plays and our running backs continued to run hard. I think our defense is playing with speed. They're running to the ball and giving good effort, Toledo said.

The Wave Offense produced several big scoring plays in the scrimmage as quarterbacks Scott Elliot and Kevin Moore each threw a touchdown pass to receivers Jeremy Williams and Shannon Davis.

"We have a lot of depth at receiver. We have some veteran guys that can get up field and we are excited about the young players that have really been progressing during camp," said Toledo.

The Wave has been preparing for their season opener on September 8 against Mississippi State in the dome and will now move into to their regular season game week mode now that the first game of the season is about a week away.

Junior quarterback Scott Elliott was 8-of-17 for 128 yards with one touchdown and one interception. WR Williams paced the Green Wave with three receptions for an even 100 yards and a touchdown.

The Wave Defense, which dominated the early part of the scrimmage got solid play for their secondary. Josh Lumar turned in a nice performance as did junior corner back Charles Harris, who returned an interception 74-yards for a touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Troy Wilson forced and recovered a fumble and returned it 33- yards for a touchdown. And no special teams, freshman corner Phillip Davis had a pair of 60-plus yard punt returns for touchdowns.

Toledo has been impressed with his freshman class thus far through fall camp as several youngsters have put themselves in position to vie for playing time in 2007.

"Camp has been long and hot but everyone has been working hard and hopefully the hard work will pay off this season."

True freshman defensive tackle Justin Adams led the Green Wave with three sacks for 15 yards lost while sophomore defensive end Logan Kelley and rookie linebacker Lamont Simmons each had a pair.

The Bob Toledo era officially begins when the Green Wave open the 2007 season on Saturday, Sept. 8, when Tulane takes on Mississippi State at 6 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome
