B.C.'s Ryan leads preseason All-ACC team

PINEHURST, N.C. Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan was named the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason player of the year Wednesday in voting by media attending the conference's Media Days at the Pinehurst Resort.

Ryan, the first-team all-conference quarterback last season, received 31 votes in the Player of the Year voting. Virginia Tech running back Branden Ore finished second with 21 votes.

Virginia Tech led all teams with five selections on the preseason all-conference team. Offensive tackle Duane Brown, linebackers Xavier Adibi and Vince Hall and cornerback Brandon Flowers joined Ore on the team.

Earlier in the week, Virginia Tech was picked to win the conference by more than 80 percent of the media members who voted in the preseason team predictions.

Atlantic Division favorite Florida State had three players on the preseason all-conference team: wide receiver Greg Carr, defensive tackle Andre Fluellen and safety Myron Rolle.

Miami also had three preseason all-conference selections. Offensive guard Derrick Morse, defensive end Calais Campbell and safety Kenny Phillips represented the Hurricanes.

The most notable omission from the team may have been Georgia Tech's Durant Brooks, who failed to make it despite having the second-highest 2006 punting average of any returning player. Wake Forest junior Sam Swank, a Rivals.com first-team All-America kicker last year, made the team as a kicker and punter.

Clemson's talented backfield tandem of James Davis and C.J. Spiller also were passed over in favor of Ore and Georgia Tech's Tashard Choice, who led the conference in rushing last year.
