Monty Makes it Official

As projected by IW two weekends ago, 6-3, 220-pound linebacker Joe Monty, the younger brother of former UW linebacking great Pete Monty, committed to Wisconsin.

The Fort Collins High School senior made his official commitment to Defensive Line Coach John Palermo on Thursday night, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

"You can't do any better than the Big Ten. Wisconsin is my favorite," Monty told IW after his Dec. 1 visit.

Monty has football in his bloodlines, as his father Tim is the head coach at Ft. Collins, and his older brother is a former Badger legend still playing on Sundays.

"My family has everything to do (with my success)," Monty said. "(Pete) and I are really close."

Monty started at middle linebacker and fullback this year, which wasn't a successful one for his team but individually, he played the best football of his career.

"I played really well. I had a lot of tackles, I had a few touchdowns and caught the ball a lot," Monty said.

Monty was hosted on his visit by wide receiver Clint Cosgrove. He said his trip "was awesome," particularly touring the campus, going to a basketball game and meeting Ron Dayne. At the time, Monty said it was unlikely he would change his mind from committing to UW, and that proved to be true.

Monty plans on majoring in business and said Wisconsin offers him the best combination of academics and football.

While his favorite position is fullback, he's willing to play any position as long as he's on the field. Wisconsin recruited him as a defensive end.

Monty said regardless of where he plays, he will bring a lot of intensity.

"I love football. I want to be out there and I have a great motor," Monty said. "I go as hard as I can the whole time, and I can hit really hard."
