Black squad wins 20-14

The Black team scored 20 first-half points, the White squad rallied to score a pair of second-half touchdowns, and the end result was a 20-14 win by the Black during the Oregon State football's team spring game on Saturday at Reser Stadium.

On a warm, mostly overcast day in front of 6,796 fans, the Beavers split up into two fairly evenly matched teams. Both halves were played with a 60-minute running clock.

Sean Canfield had the best day among four OSU quarterbacks that saw action. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown with one interception for the Black squad. Lyle Moevao saw the most action for the White squad, and he went 13-for-28 for 168 yards and one touchdown.

A few OSU players were held out for precautionary reasons, including Yvenson Bernard, Derrick Doggett, Alan Darlin, William 'Akau'ola VeaRoy Schuening and Jeff Van Orsow. To keep the Beaver quarterbacks safe, defenders were not allowed to hit them today.

After both teams went two possessions without scoring, the Black struck on one big play. On the first and only play of the drive, Canfield flipped a shovel pass to Clinton Polk, and the running back took it 70 yards for the opening score.

The Black defense made it 14-0 moments later. Moevao dropped back and faked a pass, but had the ball ripped out of his hands by blitzing linebacker Bryant Cornell. Cornell had no one between himself and the end zone and he raced 42 yards for a touchdown.

Canfield later led the Black on a nice drive, mixing short passes with runs by various players, but it stalled at the White 28-yard line. Alexis Serna came out and kicked a 45-yard field goal to make the score 17-0.

Late in the first half, following a fumble recovery by the Black's Evan Hull, Serna kicked another field goal from 54 yards. That would be the Black team's final points, however.

The White began the second half with an impressive 14-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Gunderson to Sam Oltman. The key play during the drive was a 16-yard completion on fourth-and-nine from Gunderson to Brady Camp.

On their last possession of the second half, the White squad took over at the 50-yard line, and two plays later, they were in the end zone. Moevao connected with Shane Morales for 34 yards, and then found Camp for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

The Black squad drove into White territory on four of their five possessions in the second half, but couldn't come up with anything.

The White squad forced two turnovers in the game: a first-half interception by Greg Laybourn and a second-half fumble recovery by Gerard Lee. The White team had a total of eight sacks (officials would whistle the play dead when a quarterback was touched), while the Black team had three sacks.

The Beavers announced their 2007 team captains, which were selected by a team vote: Bernard, Doggett, Darlin, Sammie Stroughter and Van Orsow.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed to honor those affected by the Virginia Tech tragedy. The OSU band then performed the Virginia Tech fight song, followed by the national anthem. OSU's players have been wearing "VT" logo decals on their helmets the past couple of weeks.
