Carswell Is No Joke

After a junior season when he caught 32 passes for 711 yards and 11 touchdowns, people started to talk about Milpitas (Calif.) wide receiver Brandon Carswell. Determined to back up that talk, the 6-1, 175-pound Carswell went out and had an exceptional outing at the Stanford NIKE Camp and followed that up with summer camps at USC and Cal.

Following those camp and combine appearances, Carswell started to reel in the scholarship offers and they continue to pour in even this fall. The three-star prospect credits those spring and summer appearances for the rise in interest.

"I think it's just me being more exposed and going to the camps this past summer, getting my name out and making sure everybody knew that I wasn't a joke," said Carswell. "Once they got my tape from this year, and I'm playing quarterback this year instead of receiver, they said 'Okay, he's an athlete and can run around and do things.'"

Two of the more recent offers came from USC and Cal, two teams he has been interested in since the start of the process. The Trojans' offer came within the last month.

"That was about three weeks ago," Carswell reported. "Coach [Lane] Kiffin, Coach [Pat] Ruel and Coach [Pete] Carroll all had talked to me and Coach Carroll offered me."

The offer from Cal did not take long to follow, coming in just last week. His proximity to the Berkeley campus has helped with his familiarity of Cal’s program.

"I really like Cal. I was glad to get that offer," said Carswell. "I have been going to their home games and I am always talking to their coaches. They came to see me play and really liked my attitude and thought I could get it done on the field. They want me to come in there, make some big plays and be one of their receivers of the future."

Being a regular at Cal games over the past year, Carswell has had a chance to analyze the Bears' offense and feels he would be a good fit.

"I think I would definitely fit in," Carswell said. "A lot of the routes their receivers run, I really like to run those routes. I have the ability to go deep or I can become a possession receiver."

Carswell has an official visit set up to Cal for the weekend of Dec. 8 and he has also scheduled one to USC for Dec. 15th. Those two teams appear in his top five, and he plans to take visits to each of the schools on that list.

"There's not an outright leader right now, but I do have five teams that are up there: USC, Cal, Oregon, Boise State and UNLV," said Carswell.

Milpitas is off to a 6-4 start to their season. As he noted, Carswell is playing quarterback and has racked up 960 yards passing and ten touchdowns through the air as well as 1,109 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns through those ten games.
