Southern California High School Football Top 10 Week One

1.) St. John Bosco

For the second season in a row, head coach Jason Negro and the Braves open the season as the No. 1 team in Southern California. Bosco is also one of the top teams in the country. There's a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, with senior quarterback and UCLA commit Josh Rosen headlining the Braves' collection of playmakers.

2.) Servite

Dual-threat quarterback Travis Waller returns to lead a top-heavy Friars team. Servite has the star power on offense and defense to challenge St. John Bosco for a Trinity League title, but the team lacks depth. A couple of injuries to key positions and Servite could be fighting to stay .500 thanks to a brutal regular season schedule.

3.) Mater Dei

If the quarterback position was removed from the equation, the Monarchs might sit atop this list. Mater Dei is stacked, especially on defense, but will be breaking in a new signal-caller with Chase Forrest having moved on to Cal. Sophomore Matthew McDonald is talented but lacks experience. Senior tight end Kyle Penniston will provide a nice security blanket for McDonald as he acclimates to his role.

4.) Serra

The Cavaliers will be relying on their defense early on, as head coach Scott Altenberg is breaking in a number of new skill position players. Luckily, Serra has a pair of five-star recruits to help keep opposing offense in check. Linebacker John Houston and defensive end Rasheem Green are two of the best defenders in the country.

5.) Alemany

Armed with a pair of explosive playmakers in running back Dominic Davis and wide receiver Desean Holmes, the Warriors will be a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Senior lineman Sione Taufahema will be counted on to help control both lines of scrimmage for Alemany.

6.) JSerra

The Lions face an extreme uphill battle to knock off three superior Trinity League teams in their quest for a league title, but there's legitimate hope. Among JSerra's 16 returning starters is quarterback Nick Robinson, who guided the Lions to two consecutive Trinity League wins to close out last season. He'll have to find a new favorite target after Dante Pettis and his 12 touchdowns graduated.

7.) Hart

The Indians raced off to an 8-0 start behind the play of quarterback Brady White. As a junior in 2013, Hart's signal-caller threw for 4,500 yards and tossed 41 touchdown passes, which was highlighted by a 500-yard, 7-touchdown performance in a one-point win over Chaminade. White's play tailed off in the second half of the season, as he threw 12 interceptions in his last seven games. In order to continue to improve, the Indians and White will need to remain consistent throughout the season.

8.) Chaminade

Bar Milo is back, and with him, the Eagles have one of the better groups of linemen in the region. That's important, as Chaminade will be breaking in a new quarterback and new members of the secondary. The Eagles will need to control the line of scrimmage to let their inexperienced players develop.

9.) Bakersfield

The Drillers will get an early chance to prove they belong on this list, as the team welcomes Oaks Christian tonight. The Lions aren't as talented as they have been in years passed, but Bakersfield can't miss this opportunity to represent the Central Section in this highly anticipated contest.

10.) Mission Viejo

No longer the class of the Southern Section, the Diablos and head coach Bob Johnson will be challenged to steal some of the thunder away from the Trinity League's top teams. Mission Viejo has a very good chance to go undefeated, thanks to a watered down South Coast League and a light preseason schedule.
