Illini pursue 2-star athlete

Speedy 2-star athlete Isaac James from Carmel (Ind.) is seeing interest pick up this spring. His offers currently stand at ten, including an offer from Illinois.

The 5-foot-11, 180 pound James is an option quarterback at Carmel who is being recruited to play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. James broke down where the recruiting process stands.

"I don't have a specific order, but the schools that are recruiting me the hardest are the ones I like the most," James said. "I'm hearing the most Wisconsin, Indiana, Western Michigan, Illinois, and Northwestern."

This spring, James is busy running track. He's one of the top ranked sprinters and long-jumpers in the state of Indiana. Prior to track season, James found time to stop by Champaign to check out the Illini during a spring practice.

"I went to Illinois in March and I really liked the campus and the coaches," James said. "I knew them before I went on the visit. I was good to finally go there and see the team."

Illinois defensive coordinator Tim Banks is recruiting James, and he stopped by Carmel to check on him during the spring evaluation period.

"My relationship with Coach Banks is really strong," James said. "He came to one of my track practices last week. I'm pretty sure he is looking at me to play DB since he is the defensive backs coach. "

Recent offers for James include Wisconsin and Army. He doesn't yet have specific plans for his official visits, but look for a final college decision sometime late this summer.

"I'm going to take more visits and make sure I've seen all of the schools I want to see," James said. "I'm going to wait a little longer in the recruiting process before I make a decision. It' will probably be right as the football season starts."
