Nebraska will kick-off the 2013 on Saturday against Wyoming. The Huskers enter the 2013 season as one of the favorites to win the Legends Division and arguably return one of their most explosive offenses in recent memory.
As things get closer to kickoff, here are today's keys to victory over the Cowboys. Nebraska enters tonight's game as a 29 point favorite.
Play with confidence
The biggest thing I want to see from Nebraska as they take the field tonight is confidence. With 91,000 fans behind them, along with a night game atmosphere, they should have a serious advantage.
I look for Wyoming to be somewhat shell shocked by the environment, as a lot of their players haven't played in an atmosphere like they'll see on Saturday. Nebraska needs to take advantage of this and lay an early knockout blow.
Tackle in space
The strength of this Wyoming team is quarterback Brett Smith and his wide receivers. Look for the Cowboys to try and spread out Nebraska's defense and make their young defenders make plays in space.
I look for Wyoming to do a lot of shifts and motions to try and confuse NU's young defense to find some breakdowns. The Huskers need to stay disciplined and limit their breakdowns in coverage.
Win on third down
One of the biggest keys for a young defense is to win on third down.
As head coach Bo Pelini builds this Blackshirt defense, it will be important for them to keep their composure and win on third down. If Nebraska's defense can win on third down early, it will go a long way in setting the tone of this game
Limit turnovers and fumbles
All off-season we've heard how Nebraska has done their best to limit turnovers and fumbles in training camp.
The only thing that can stop Nebraska's offense is themselves. It will be important for them to limit their turnovers and mistakes against Wyoming.
We've heard how they've addressed this throughout Fall Camp. How will it look on Saturday? This will go a long way in setting the tone for the 2013 season.
Wear Wyoming down
With Nebraska's depth on offense, I look for the Huskers to wear down the Cowboy defense. The Huskers have a deep offensive line and three quality running backs.
By the end of third quarter I look for NU to wear down Wyoming and run the ball at will. The Huskers have a significant advantage in overall depth and they need to take advantage of it.
Callahan's weekly predictions
Wyoming will be able to connect on a few pass plays, but in the end Nebraska's depth will be too much and I expect the Huskers to run for over 300 yards on the ground and cover the 29 point spread.
