Despite winning the past three meetings against Oklahoma State, all coming the past two seasons, Virginia Tech entered yesterday as an unlikely winner. The Cowboys are ranked No 15 in the latest AP poll.
The Hokies hung with and outlasted Oklahoma State, pulling out an 81-71 win that put them at 7-0 for the first time since 1982.
"We really had Hokie Nation behind us today with those guys screaming and yelling," junior forward Jarell Eddie said. "It kept us going, kept the heartbeat going. To get that win against that good team, because they're a really good team, for them to come in here and we leave with the win, it's really big for us."
Eddie had to do a little more with senior guard Erick Green limited to just nine minutes in the first half with two fouls. Green had 28 points, but Eddie pitched in 15 points, while his 12 rebounds helped Virginia Tech to a 41-31 overall rebounding edge.
"We like to play that 95-point, that type of style play," Eddie said. "But there are gonna be games where you're just not scoring that much, the other team's playing good defense and you're gonna have to slow it down and execute your offense in the half court. For us to come out and win that grind it out game and come out with the win, it's tremendous."
The win caps a week that also included a 95-79 win over Iowa on Tuesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Both wins put the Hokies in an unlikely spot, as they were picked to finish 10th in the ACC in preseason polls from the conference's coaches and media.
"It just means that we're gonna keep getting better," Eddie said. "We were able to get two good wins this week and we've gotta keep working. We can't stop working just because we got two good wins this week. That doesn't mean we can stop."
