Bears snag four-star tailback

Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame four-star tailback Khalfani Muhammad went to Spain this offseason to compete in the Junior Olympics. He was disappointed in his 100m time. He ran "only" a 10.7. For most other football players -- much less running backs -- that's perfectly fine. But not for Muhammad, who will go into his senior track season with four titles to defend. He's also the California football team's latest commitment -- and the Bears' first without a head coach.

"I know Ron Gould -- who I was just talking with -- he's going to stick around," Muhammad said of the veteran Cal running backs coach, who paid an in-home visit to the Muhammad household on Tuesday night, and will be retained through the transition from former skipper Jeff Tedford to whoever the new head coach will be. "He's been there for 16 years. I have a good relationship with him. I thought it would be the best fit for me. I was born in California, raised in California, I want to play football in California, and I want to play football for coach G -- one of the best coaches in California, for the California Golden Bears."

Muhammad -- teammate of 2014 Cal commit Koa Farmer -- rushed for 1,420 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, adding 307 receiving yards and another two TDs through the air.

"Representing where I'm from, Cal's even in my name [Khal]," laughed Muhammad. "That's my choice. I'm committed to it and I'm looking forward to the future."

Gould is not quite done for the evening, either. He'll be visiting three-star tailback Terrell Newby. All five coaches being retained will be making in-homes tonight. Ashley Ambrose is visiting Darius Allensworth, as well.

Stay tuned for more in-depth coverage of Muhammad's unorthodox commitment.
