Tigers Fall Again in Battle 4 Atlantis, 84-75 to Minnesota
The Memphis Tigers have dropped their second consecutive game in the Battle 4 Atlantis. This time, the Tigers fell 84-75 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The Tigers fell victim to the Curse of the Scorned Homegrown Player. In this case, that scorned player was former White Station High standout Andre Hollins.
In a performance reminiscent of how Hollins played as a senior at White Station, Hollins strafed Memphis for a career-high 41 points, including 5-of-5 from beyond the three-point line. He also sealed the game by draining 5-of-6 free throws in the final 90 seconds, while also putting an exclamatiuon point on proceedings with a breakaway dunk with about 16 second left in the contest.
Hollins ended the afternoon shooting 12-of-16 overall from the field and 12-of-13 from the line. He and Grizzlies' coach Lionel Hollins' son, Austin Hollins, combined for 48 points, while the Memphians on the Tigers' roster combined for 32.
D.J. Stephens led Memphis in points (15, shooting 3-of-3 from beyond the arc) and rebounds (7), while Tarik Black added 13 points, followed by Adonis Thomas with 12 (on just 5-of-14 shooting) and 5 boards.
Memphis falls to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 during the Battle 4 Atlantis. Memphis now falls into the 7th place game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. on AXS television. They will play the loser of the Northern Iowa-Stanford contest.
