Georgetown Men's Basketball Picked Fifth in BIG EAST Preseason Poll

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team was picked to finish in fifth place in the BIG EAST preseason poll, voted on by the league's coaches and announced on Wednesday morning at the annual Media Day, held at the New York Athletic Club.

Sophomore forward Otto Porter (Sikeston, Mo./Scott County Central), one of nine letterwinners and three starters back for the Hoyas this season, was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team. Porter is the ninth Georgetown player under Head Coach John Thompson III to earn Preseason All-BIG EAST honors and it is the 12th time a Hoya has earned preseason accolades since 2004-05.

Louisville was the unanimous choice to win the 2012-13 regular season title in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Cardinals received 14 first-place votes and a total of 196 points. The league's head coaches do not place their own teams on their ballots. Syracuse was tabbed for second place with 175 points, while Notre Dame was picked for third place with 166 points. Cincinnati was picked fourth and the league's coaches picked the Hoyas fifth.

Rounding out the top-10 was Pittsburgh, Marquette, USF, Connecticut and St. John's. Rutgers was selected 11th, followed by DePaul, Seton Hall and Providence.

Georgetown finished the 2011-12 season with a 24-9 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight years under Head Coach John Thompson III. The Hoyas, who were picked to finish 10th in the BIG EAST, posted a 12-6 record in league play and were among the top five teams in the league.

Porter, who was selected as a fourth team Preseason All-American and was also tabbed as the 16th-best player in the country by CBSSports.com, was the youngest player selected to the all-league first team.

Porter finished the 2011-12 season ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 9.7 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 6.8 per game. He appeared in all 33 of GU's games, starting eight times, and led the team in field goal percentage, connecting on 52.5 percent of his shots from the floor. Porter, who averaged 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals, reached double figures in scoring 14 times, had seven double figure rebounding games and recorded three double-doubles.
