Warhawk Inside Slant - Auburn Edition

Warhawk Inside Slant

The Warhawks entered War Memorial Stadium to kick off the 2012 season against the eighth ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. After falling behind 28-7, the Warhawks looks like they were going to run the series record to 0-10.  Late heroics by junior quarterback Kolton Browning and senior receiver Brent Leonard though managed to propel ULM into the national spotlight with an overtime, come from behind 34-31 win.

Now ULM Head Coach Todd Berry has the tall task of re-focusing his team's efforts to another SEC team, Auburn.  The Warhawks are 0-8 versus the Tigers, but had a near upset in 1996.  The then Indians, led Auburn through most of the contest before falling late.

NOTES, QUOTES

ULM has scored just 74 points against Auburn in eight contests, averaging nine points per game, and been shut out twice.

In the last meeting, eventual Heisman Trophy winner Cam Netwon set a school record with a 94 yard TD pass to Emory Blake.

The Tigers boast five Louisiana players, including a pair with ties to ULM - Senior receiver Travante Stallworth was a high school teammate of current Warhawk JeRon Hamm at Leesville High.  DeAngelo Benton is from neighboring city of Bastrop, La.

Week one Game Ball Goes To: Sure the easy pick is quarterback Kolton Browning, however he would not have been able to accomplish his highlight feats without the solid blocking performance by the ULM offensive line.

Keep An Eye On: Redshirt Freshmen Mitch Lane.  Lane excelled at the Hawk position last week against Arkansas and an equal performance will be need this week at Auburn.

Quote To Note:

"Excuse me, I'm having an out of body expereience."

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good: Tight ends Keavon Milton and Kevin Steed each had a few receptions, and Steed even managed to haul in a touchdown pass.  The tight end duo also made key blocks on the offense line to keep plays alive.

Still Needs Work: Defensive secondary.  The Warhawks allowed several big pass plays that ended with, or setup, Razorback scores.

Roster Report:

S Khari Usher will miss 6-8 weeks with a leg injury, look for him to return just in time for Sun Belt Conference action.

Brent Leonard was helped off the field in the overtime period, he was fine following the game, and was suffering from having the wind knocked out of him.
