OSI HD: Lunt passes first test, now for the road

The wait for fans and coaches alike to see Wes Lunt in live game action was a long one. The true freshman was named as Oklahoma State's starting quarterback in April, following spring drills. Unfortunately for both groups, Lunt's experience in the season-opener was limited to just four series in OSU's 84-0 win over Savannah State.

The blowout saw backup J.W. Walsh get much more game experience. While his time was limited, Lunt connected on all 11 of his pass attempts for 129 yards. It was enough of a dress rehearsal to enforce the confidence that teammates already had in the youngster.

"He carries himself well," said guard Lane Taylor He shows up to practice every day and just tries to get better. With the nature of being a freshman, there's just a lot to take in. He shows up and performs every day. You want someone who's going to work hard and try to get better. He can throw the ball. He's pretty accurate with it, and he makes hard decisions."

Lunt's calm demeanor will be tested this week as the Cowboys hit the road and head to Arizona.

Head coach Mike Gundy has experience as a freshman quarterback himself, but isn't sure that gives him any kind of an advantage in prepping Lunt for what lies ahead.

"The game's changed so much from back when I was playing," Gundy said. "We would ask him to execute and distribute the ball to the guys on the offense who can make plays, play smart, take care of the football and not try to do too much."

In his debut, Lunt did those things. He also ran the OSU offense at a very high tempo. The quality level of opponent rises dramatically this week, on top of being away from the comforts of home.
