Colorado shootings hit close to home for Del Rio

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. - Like most everyone else, Luke Del Rio heard the tragic news about the deadly shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that has gripped the nation. But for the Oklahoma State commit, it hit even a little closer to home.

That's because it was closer to home.

The Denver (Colo.) Valor Christian quarterback said Friday at the Elite 11 that he was following the reports and that his family - his father is former NFL coach Jack Del Rio - had talked to loved ones.

According to Del Rio, the family doesn't believe they knew anyone who was at the theater when James Holmes allegedly opened fire killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more during an early showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

One of those hurt in the massacre was Colorado State offensive tackle commit Zack Golditch who's from nearby Aurora (Colo.) Gateway.

Golditch and friends were sitting in the adjoining theater when a bullet ripped through the wall and struck him under his ear and exited through the backside of his hairline.

Del Rio said he had never been to the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora where the murders took place but was still saddened to hear the news, shaken because it occurred so close to where he lives.

"They got him, and my prayers go out to families of the victims," Del Rio said.

"It kind of shakes you a little bit."

According to reports, 11 of the 58 people injured in the shooting were still in critical condition.

"None of my friends family or relatives were there," Del Rio said. "(My father) hasn't heard anything, and he would have heard.

"It's tragic. It goes to show we have to step up our security. We're finally aware of it, and everyone is upset it had to take this to realize it."

Rivals.com rates Del Rio as the third-best recruit in the Colorado state rankings. He committed to Oklahoma State on May 31.
