The Hokies could be losing one of its top defenders after an arrest last week.

According to Virginia Tech media relations, Redshirt freshman defensive end Dadi Nicholas has been suspended indefinitely by the school after being charged with larceny as principal in the second degree.

Nicolas' arrest came June 22 for an offense that happened May 29. His arraignment is set for July 13.

VT media relations told HokieHaven.com that Nicolas has not left the program, but was immediately suspended indefinitely from the football team upon his arrest in conjunction with University Policy 1035. Under university policy, a student-athlete arrested and charged with a felony is automatically suspended until charges are dropped.

According to Virginia state law, larceny is the act of depriving someone of the use of, or otherwise stealing or theft of property, goods or money. This includes shoplifting.

Grand larceny is considered at goods valued at $200 or more, while petite larceny is anything below. That applies to Nicolas' case.

Nicolas was charged as a principal in the second degree, which means he assisted and was present for but didn't take part in the crime.

Grand larceny carries a charge of a maximum 20 years in prison because it's considered a felony. Petite larceny, a misdemeanor, has a maximum one year in prison charge.

If the charges are dropped or reduced to a misdemeanor, Nicolas could return to the team if cleared by AD Jim Weaver, according to VT media relations. If he is convicted of a felony, he is then automatically dismissed from the program, but he hasn't left as of right now, he's just suspended from all athletic-related activities.

Nicolas climbed to as high as third on the depth chart.

Two other Hokies players left the team this week. Sophomore linebacker Nick Dew and sophomore Theron Norman announced they will be transferring from the Hokies due to unrelated and non-criminal issues.

The transfers are likely due to playing time, as both have been relegated to special teams. Their reasons however are officially unclear.
