McDermott named 1st Team All-American

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton basketball sophomore Doug McDermott has been named a first-team All-American by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He is Creighton's first player to be named first-team All-American by the USBWA since it began handing out the honors in 1957.

McDermott is joined on the first-team by Anthony Davis (Kentucky), Draymond Green (Michigan State), Thomas Robinson (Kansas) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State).

McDermott was already one of 20 men on the USBWA's Oscar Robertson Award watch list, which is awarded to the nation's top player next Monday (March 19).

Creighton's only other USBWA All-American came in 2003, when Kyle Korver earned second-team accolades. The last first-team All-American from an MVC school was in 1988, when Bradley's Hersey Hawkins was honored.

McDermott has already been named Larry Bird Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the State Farm MVC Tournament in the past 10 days. Last Monday, McDermott was tabbed a first-team All-American by ESPN.com's Jason King, and last Tuesday he was named a second-team All-American by Sporting News.

McDermott ranks third nationally with his 23.2 scoring average and seventh with his 61.0 percent shooting from the floor. He also ranks second in the MVC with 8.2 rebounds per game and 49.5 percent marksmanship from
three-point range. McDermott owns a Creighton-record 765 points this season, and scored 33 points in CU's MVC Tournament title game victory over Illinois State that clinched a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
