Berry suspended from football team

Embattled Ohio State running back Jaamal Berry has been suspended from the team after being charged with assault and disorderly conduct on Wednesday after he allegedly beat up a 21-year-old male in downtown Columbus on Oct. 21.

The Ohio State University Department of Athletics released a statement saying Berry is in violation of the student-athlete standards of conduct. Berry will remain suspended until charges filed against him have been resolved.

The alleged victim is accusing Berry of hitting him with a closed fist and taunting him with racial slurs. The altercation occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 21 near the Columbus Sports Commission. A civil lawsuit was filed last week charging Berry assault and battery and ethnic intimidation.

Berry dressed for Saturday's game against Wisconsin but did not appear in the game. Chris Fields took his spot on the kick return unit.

A court date has been set for Dec. 1st at 9 a.m. The assault charges carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. The disorderly conduct charges carry a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and/or a $250 fine.
