SAN FRANCISCO -- From 2005 to 2008, Zack Follett was one of the most feared defensive forces in the Pac-10. Now, he contends with perhaps his most fearsome opponent: the Bear Republic Podcast.

A 2005 Rivals.com Freshman All-American, the man who came to be known as The Pain Train wreaked havoc on quarterbacks from the turf of California Memorial Stadium to Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. As a sophomore in 2006, Follett earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors, following that up with a 2007 second-team selection and culminating in a 2008 senior season in which he was named to the all-conference first-team and the MVP of the Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park.

Drafted in the seventh round by the Detroit Lions, The Zyger spent two seasons in the NFL -- taking time to play with some real lionsbefore retiring due to a neck injury he sustained while leaving his heart and soul on the field in Berkeley.

Follett reveals just what he's up do in retirement, what he thinks about the current Bears linebackers and defense, and discusses perhaps sniffing out a coaching position at his alma mater.

In this week's special Homecoming edition of the podcast, Follett joins the crew for an exclusive interview, as Jon Doss, Robert Kenneth Clampett, Danny Freisinger and BearTerritory publisher Ryan Gorcey break down last week's 43-15 loss to No. 9 Oregon, and preview this Thursday's match-up at home against USC.

The gang talks about the Bears running game and passing game, as well as the Trojans' vaunted aerial attack as Cal prepares for a primetime battle on the same turf on which Follett recorded nine tackles, four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one QB hurry and two sacks in a 24-17 Bears victory over Miami -- the last time that Cal came out on top in a bowl game.

How well has the offensive line been playing lately? What's gotten into tailback Isi Sofele? Can quarterback Zach Maynard deliver the first Bears win over USC since 2003? Will the Trojans' five-star freshman George Farmer play? What effect could he have alongside playmakers Robert Woods, Marqise Lee and quarterback Matt Barkley? We discuss that and more on this week's podcast, straight from The Republic at 3213 Scott St., in the Marina District of San Francisco.
