Selby picked 49th by Memphis

Josh Selby, the former top-ranked player in the country coming out of high school, was selected at No. 49, 19 in the second round by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Selby, a potential star at Kansas only to be held back by injuries and various circumstances including an early season suspension, finally ended what turned out to be a long evening waiting for his name to be called. He will join former Jayhawk Darrell Arthur in Memphis.

Predictions on where Selby would land ranged from late first round to undrafted by some. It was likely a longer night than Selby himself figured it would be, but at the end of the day, an NBA team called his name and he will join a young but very talented team in Memphis.

The Grizzlies made a respectable playoff run this past season and feature talented guards in Mike Conley and OJ Mayo.

Selby has the chance to come in and add even more athleticism, as well as a confident attitude and approach to the game. Selby is considered an above average defender and a player with unlimited scoring ability.

He posted a 42-inch vertical at the Chicago combine-tied for the top posting.

He was never able to show his true colors at Kansas, but his dream of becoming a star at the professional level is in front of him. Why Selby fell to pick No. 49 is unknown, but a player who tends to carry a chip on his shoulder is a dangerous one and joining a team with plenty of playoff potential means he'll likely not face much pressure on an individual level in the immediate future.
